Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Relationships includes the foundation Relationships with Peers. Children from 4 through 11 months show interest in other children’s actions, feelings, and interests.

Example 1

Text on screen: Shows interest in other children’s actions and interests

On screen: 10-month-old Audrey and 33-month-old Ximena sit next to each other on the floor. They are each playing with bubble popping sensory toys. Ximena is leaning forward, pushing bubbles to make them pop.

Audrey: (vocalizing)

On screen: Audrey watches Ximena and then lets go of her toy. She moves closer to Ximena and touches her hair. Ximena looks up at her. Audrey touches Ximena’s face with one finger. Ximena goes back to popping bubbles. Audrey scoots closer. She touches Ximena’s toy then touches Ximena’s face again.

Text on screen: Shows interest in other children’s actions and feelings

On screen: 9-month-old Aaliyah is lying on her tummy on a rug. Nearby, 9-month-old Phoebe is squirming on her hands and knees as she fusses.

Phoebe: (crying)

On screen: Aaliyah looks at Phoebe and then looks around the room. Aaliyah looks again at Phoebe. Phoebe lies down on her belly and Aaliyah scoots toward her and reaches out. She can’t quite reach Phoebe. She pulls herself a little closer and reaches out again. She tries to pat Phoebe’s back. Phoebe pushes herself back up onto her hands and knees.

Text on screen: Shows interest in other children’s actions and interests

On screen: 8-month-old Everett and Kaia sit near each other on a playroom floor. Everett is playing with clear disks, clacking them together. Kaia holds a soft book, flapping it as she watches Everett.

Everett looks up and makes eye contact with Kaia. Then they both go back to playing. Kaia continues watching Everett play as she waves her book around. They both look toward someone off screen. Then they look at each other and break into big smiles.
