Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Relationships includes the foundation Relationships With Caregivers. Children from 4 through 11 months initiate interactions and seek to be physically close to caregivers with whom they are developing an attachment relationship.

Text on screen: Initiates interaction to get physically close to familiar caregiver
On screen: 11-month-old Kailani is on her hands and knees crying. She turns toward a caregiver approaching and sits up, raising her arms. The caregiver kneels in front of Kailani and picks her up. Kailani leans into the caregiver’s hold.
Kailani: (crying)
Caregiver 1: (humming softly)
Kailani: (continued crying)
On screen: The caregiver holds Kailani close, rocking back and forth. She strokes Kailani’s head, wipes her tears, and gently rubs and pats her back.
Caregiver 1: You’re OK.
Kailani: (continued crying)
Caregiver 1: Let’s go for sleep.

On screen: 9-month-old Madelyn sits on the floor and interacts with her caregiver, who speaks to her in Spanish. As the caregiver watches, Madelyn spins a toy.
Caregiver 2: (in Spanish) Do you like this one?
Madelyn: (grunting)
On screen: Madelyn crawls toward her caregiver
Caregiver 2: What’s the matter?
On screen: Madelyn climbs up the caregiver’s legs. The caregiver affectionately adjusts Madelyn’s shirt where it is pulling up. Madelyn rolls off the caregiver’s lap and sits upright on the floor. She looks at something off screen. She spins the toy with one hand, her other hand on her caregiver’s leg. She turns back toward her caregiver, who gently pets her head and back.
Caregiver 2: Are there a lot of people? It’s OK. Is it OK? It’s OK. Yes. It’s all right.

On screen: 9-month-old Skye sits on the floor watching her mother approach from off screen. As her mother gets closer, Skye turns and crawls toward her. Skye climbs onto an infant climbing structure and reaches up as her mother bends down.
Mother: Mommy’s going to go now. I love you.
On screen: Skye’s mother sits on her knees, picks up Skye and kisses her on the cheek. Sky clings to her mother with one arm. Her mother holds her closely, rocks side-to-side, and stands up still holding her.
