Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Relationships includes the foundation Relationships with Caregivers. Children from 23 through 36 months occasionally reconnect with attachment figures when exploring the environment. When distressed, children may seek to be physically close to these caregivers.
Example 1
Text on screen: Explores environment, occasionally reconnecting with caregivers
On screen: In an outdoor play space, 34-month-old Malia stands at a sensory bin filled with sand, water, and toys. She gently lifts a baby doll out of the water. She holds the doll by the hand and walks across the yard with it.
Malia walks across a series of stepping-stones. She stumbles, falls gently onto the grass, and drops the doll. She stands up and walks around a caregiver playing with other children. She stops at a diaper changing station and looking inside the baskets. Then she explores a rolling cart full of tea pots. She glances toward caregiver and walks over to him, leaning against him. He sits back and looks at Malia.
Caregiver 1: What do you need, Malia? You need a hug?
On screen: Malia steps forward and hugs the caregiver, who wraps his arms around her.
Caregiver 1: What’s up?
Example 2

On screen: 26-month-old Aurora stands at a play kitchen pretending to cook. She timidly looks around and sees her caregiver. She quickly walks toward the caregiver and takes her hand, tugging gently. The caregiver follows Aurora.
Caregiver 2: Come on back. You say to come on back, sit with me.
On screen: Aurora excitedly sits in a chair in the play kitchen, and the caregiver sits in a chair behind her.
Caregiver 2: Sit other side with you?

On screen: 32-month-old Ethan stands on top of a stool exploring a collection of bottles filled with different colored water.
Ethan: What we want… that one.
On screen: Ethan picks up a bottle filled with blue water.
Ethan: Whoa!
On screen: He tilts the bottle sideways, then holds it up to his eyes to look through the blue water.
Caregiver 3: Let’s see what Evie’s doing. She’s got lots of triangles.
On screen: Ethan sees his caregiver with another child and carefully hops off the stool.
Caregiver 3: Look at all those triangles.
On screen: Ethan holds the bottle up to his eyes again, looking through the water as he walks toward his caregiver.
Ethan: Uh-oh.
Caregiver 3: Uh-oh.
Caregiver 3: I see you.
On screen: The caregiver looks at Ethan and raises her hands toward the bottle. She gestures, moving her hands around the bottle.
Caregiver 3: Are you wearing them like sunglasses? Are you putting them on like sunglasses?
On screen: Ethan continues to look through the water, staying close to his caregiver.
