Social and Emotional Development

Narrator: The Social and Emotional Development domain includes the strand Social Interaction. Infants in the first four months observe and respond to people in their environment. They begin to engage in back-and-forth interactions, expressing a range of emotions and needs.

Text on screen: Makes eye contact with other people

On screen: 4-month-old Anaya is lying on her back on a blanket. She looks up at her grandmother, who is about to put her sock on her foot. Anaya lies still, looking intently at her grandmother’s face.

Grandmother: Hi. What’s up, boo? How you doing? Huh? Give me your foot. We’re gonna put this sock on.

On screen: When her grandmother touches her foot, Anaya stretches her leg toward the touch. Her grandmother slips on the sock. Anaya continues to maintain eye contact with her grandmother.

Grandmother: Aw yeah. Who’s grammy’s girl? Ooop, look. The toe. The toe showed up. Hey. (singing) Hey, good looking. Whatcha got cooking?

Text on screen: Perceives human voices

On screen: 2-month-old Stella lies on a blanket with her mother kneeling over her. Stella watches, listens, smiles, moves her body, and vocalizes in response to her mother’s gentle touches and conversation.

Mother: What?

Stella: (vocalizing)

Mother: Yeah? Yeah? You gonna smile? (trilling) Whatcha doing?

Stella: (vocalizing)

Mother: Yeah? Stella? (clicking tongue) Hi. (clicking tongue)

Stella: (vocalizing)

Mother: Oh.

Stella: (vocalizing)

On screen: The camera slowly pans back and forth between Stella and her mother. Stella continues to watch her mother, who is looking at her lovingly.

Mother: Oh really. Mmm-wah.

Stella: (vocalizing)

Mother: Yeah? What?

Stella: (vocalizing)

Mother: You gonna get excited? Yeah? What else?

Stella: (louder vocalizing)

Mother: Yeah. OK. I love you. (kiss noises)

Stella: (vocalizing)

Mother: Hi. What?

Stella: (vocalizing)

Mother: Oh, yeah? OK. Whatcha doing? Hi.

Stella: (vocalizing)

Mother: Yeah. Ah, boo! Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch

Stella: (vocalizing)

Mother: Yeah? (trilling)

Text on screen: Uses senses to perceive faces, sounds, and objects

On screen: 4-month-old Quetzaly is cradled in her caregiver’s arms as they interact. She reaches to touch her caregiver.

Caregiver: (speaking Spanish) How is my beautiful girl? How is she? Are you well? Yes. Are you well?

On screen: The caregiver offers her finger to Quetzaly and she grasps it. Quetzaly opens and closes her hand, moving it about, and touching the caregiver. She listens and watches her caregiver move her hand then looks up at her as she sings.

Caregiver: Oh, how beautiful. Is she hungry? Is she hungry? Hello, my love. (singing) Hello, hello, hello to Quetzali. Hello, hello–
