Social and Emotional Development Foundation 2.4: Interactions With Peers

Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Social Interactions includes the foundation Interactions with Peers. Children from 4 through 11 months show interest in peers. They stare at other children, explore their faces and bodies, or respond to siblings and older peers.

Example 1

Text on screen: Shows interest in peers by looking at and exploring peers’ faces and bodies

On screen: 6-month-old Amelia is on her tummy on the floor with another infant, Daniil, lying nearby. A caregiver watches over them. Amelia scoots forward toward Daniil and reaches for his leg.

Caregiver 1: (inaudible) thought so. Yeah. Amelia, you want to touch his thigh?

On screen: Amelia moves closer to Daniil’s legs, reaching, touching, and grabbing at his leg and chest. Daniil looks down and touches Amelia’s head.

Caregiver 1: Daniil say, “ow.”

On screen: Amelia looks up. Daniil extends his leg, and his foot touches Amelia’s forehead. The caregiver guides his foot down to the floor, and Amelia continues to touch and explore Daniil’s foot and leg. She turns to look at Daniil’s face. Then she reaches out to touch his tummy and legs.

Text on screen: Shows interest in peers by looking.

On screen: 9-month-old Madelyn and two other infants are seated for snack time at a low table. A caregiver sits nearby and speaks the children in English and Spanish. Madelyn chews on a cracker and watches the other infants at the table. The caregiver checks in with the other children at the table.

Caregiver 2: Cracker. Yeah. Cracker. Agua? Water? Water? Water?

On screen: Madelyn watches as Isabella, who is seated across form her, gestures with her food. In Spanish, the caregiver says to Isabella,

Caregiver 2: (speaking mixed English and Spanish) What do I say? Ay! What do I say? Isabella. Yes. Water with cracker.

On screen: Isabella coughs as she brings food to her mouth, and Madelyn smiles and vocalizes toward her. The caregiver says to Madelyn,

Caregiver 2: (to Madelyn) And you?

On screen: Madelyn continues watching Isabella cough and drink from her sippy cup.

Caregiver 2: (to Isabella) Water.

On screen: Isabella drops her sippy cup to the floor and looks down. Madelyn continues looking at her.

Caregiver 2: No.

On screen: 8-month-old Kaia lies on her back on the floor. Another infant, Everett, sits up next to her.

Kaia grabs hold of Everett’s shirt and tugs. She looks up at his ear and reaches for it. Everett feels Kaia touching his ear and looks up with wide eyes.

Kaia continues exploring by touch. She wiggles and tugs Everett’s earlobe. Everett stays calm. Kaia tries to touch Everett’s ear with her far hand, but Everett turns his head away and she can’t reach. She switches back to using her near hand and continues exploring Everett’s ear, and he lets her.

Text on screen: Shows interest in peers by looking at them and responding

On screen: 9-month-old Aaliyah is on her tummy on the floor. She is watching 11-month-old Olaseni, who is sitting in front of her holding a block. Aaliyah watches as Olaseni vocalizes happily and looks at her.

Olaseni: (vocalizing)

On screen: Olaseni looks around the room. Then he begins mouthing on the block as Aaliyah watches him. Aaliyah looks down at Olaseni’s legs and feet. She reaches out and touches one of his feet. She lowers her head to the floor and watches Olaseni turn and scoot away slightly. Olaseni turns back toward her and begins vocalizing again. Aaliyah lifts her head grinning and joins him in vocalizing.
