Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Social Interactions includes the foundation Interactions with Caregivers and Other People. Children from 4 through 11 months purposefully engage in interactions and follow a familiar person’s gaze. They are interested in and cautious of unfamiliar people.

Text on screen: Purposefully engages in interactions with familiar people
On screen: 10-month-old Audrey stands next to her caregiver who sits holding Audrey up. Audrey reaches out and grasps the caregiver’s necklace, bouncing excitedly.
Caregiver 1: Do you like my necklace?
Audrey: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 1: Yes, yes.
On screen: Audrey smiles and attempts to sing along as her caregiver sings to her.
Caregiver 1: (singing) Itsy bitsy spider went up the water spout. Down came the rain…
Audrey: (musical vocalizing)
Caregiver 1: (singing) …and washed the spider out. Out came the sun and dried—
On screen: Audrey grins as she reaches out and touches the caregiver’s mouth.
Caregiver 1: Oh! (imitating eating noises)
On screen: The caregiver playfully pretends to eat Audrey up, making her smile and giggle.
Audrey: (giggling)
Caregiver 1: (singing) — and dried all the rain.
Audrey: Up.
Caregiver 1: Up. (singing) And itsy bitsy spider…
Audrey: (Vocalizing)
Caregiver 1: Oh, wub wub wub. (singing) Went up the spout again.
On screen: The caregiver and Audrey both lean forward, touching their foreheads together.
Audrey: (Vocalizing)
Caregiver 1: Yay!

On screen: 11-month-old Ke’Ontae sits in a low feeding-chair as his caregiver feeds him. The caregiver holds out a spoonful of food, and Ke’Ontae opens his mouth in anticipation.
Caregiver 2: (laughing) What is wrong with you? I don’t know why you (inaudible).
On screen: Ke-Ontae takes a bite, and the caregiver wipes the excess food from around his mouth.
Caregiver 2: What happened? What happened, guy?
On screen: The caregiver leans in closer. Ke’Ontae makes eye contact with her and smiles.
Caregiver 2: (whispering) What happened?
Ke’Ontae: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 2: No? You full?
Ke’Ontae: (vocalizing)
On screen: The caregiver gives Ke’Ontae another spoonful of food. He takes a small amount, then shakes his head no. The caregiver mimics him.
Caregiver 2: No? OK. No, no. No, no.

On screen: 9-month-old Aaliyah lies on her stomach propped on her forearms. A caregiver lies on her side in front of Aaliyah. Aaliyah smiles and watches the caregiver roll a plush ball back and forth.
Caregiver 3: Roll it?
On screen: The caregiver props herself up higher on her elbow, and Aaliyah looks up, maintaining eye contact. The caregiver rolls the ball again. Aaliyah looks at the ball. Then she reaches out, looks at her caregiver, and pushes the ball toward her.
Caregiver 3: You did it! You did it! Rolled it to me. Now I’m going to roll it to you.
On screen: They continue watching each other as they roll the ball.
Caregiver 3: See, look.
