Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Social Interactions includes the foundation Empathy. Children from 4 through 11 months show awareness of others’ feelings by mirroring or reacting to their emotional expressions.

Text on screen: Reacts to others’ emotional expressions
On screen: 9-month-old Aaliyah lies on her belly on a rug. Nearby 10-month-old Phoebe rocks on her hands and knees and starts to cry.
Phoebe: (crying)
On screen: Aaliyah looks at Phoebe.
Phoebe: (continued crying)
On screen: Phoebe lies down on her tummy, facing away from Aaliyah.
Phoebe: (extended crying)
On screen: Aaliyah scoots on her belly and reaches toward Phoebe like she is going to stroke her hair. She is too far away. She scoots closer and reaches out again. She tries to pat Phoebe’s back but only touches her clothes. Phoebe turns, looks at Aaliyah, and looks up at a caregiver off-screen.

Text on screen: Reacts to others’ emotional expressions
On screen: Phoebe is playing with a stack of large, soft blocks with a caregiver seated nearby. Another caregiver approaches and lays Aaliyah down on her back next to Phoebe. Aaliyah starts to cry.
Aaliyah: (crying)
On screen: Phoebe turns toward Aaliyah.
Caregiver 1: I have to wash my hands, Aaliyah.
On screen: Aaliyah’s caregiver walks away, and the other caregiver tries to comfort Aaliyah.
Caregiver 2: She’ll be back. She’s going to wash her hands. OK? OK, Aaliyah?
Aaliyah: (continued crying)
On screen: Phoebe looks back and forth between the caregiver off screen and Aaliyah.
Caregiver 2: Oh, does that upset you?
On screen: The other caregiver reaches for Aaliyah and picks her up.
Caregiver 2: Come on. Come here, Aaliyah. (inaudible)

Text on screen: Mirrors others’ emotional expressions
On screen: 8-month-old Kaia and Everett are lying on the floor with a caregiver sitting nearby. Everett rolls onto his back on top of a block and begins to cry.
Everett: (crying)
Caregiver 3: Yeah, say, “I landed on the block, Katie.”
On screen: Everett rolls to his front and pushes up, and the caregiver moves the block.
Caregiver 3: Ouch! Ouch!
On screen: The caregiver moves toward Everett and reaches to pick him up.
Caregiver 3: I’m going to pick you up.
Everett: (more intense crying)
Caregiver 3: Oh, I’m so sorry. I know, I’m so sorry.
On screen: The caregiver hugs Everett, soothing him. Kaia starts to cry and wriggle in distress. The caregiver looks at Kaia.
Kaia: (crying)
Caregiver 3: Yeah. He got ouch. You’re saying, “But I want to be picked up, too.” Huh? Say, “But I want to be picked up, too.”
Kaia and Everett: (Crying)
On screen: The caregiver moves closer to Kaia.
Caregiver 3: Come here.
On screen: The caregiver looks at Everett.
Caregiver 3: Think we can pick up Kaia?
Kaia and Everett: (continued crying)
On screen: The caregiver sets Everett on her lap and picks Kaia up.
Caregiver 3: All right, all right. All right, all right. Come on. Come here. Oh! Oh!

On screen: The caregiver sits holding Everett in a standing position facing her. They smile excitedly at each other. The caregiver makes exaggerated happy and excited faces at Everett. He watches, wiggling his body and mimicking her.
Caregiver 3: (Gasping) Ah, boo! Ah, boo!
Everett: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 3: Yeah?
