Social and Emotional Development Foundation 2.1: Social Understanding

Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Social Interactions includes the foundation Social Understanding. Children from 23 through 36 months sometimes communicate about their own needs, feelings, and intentions, as well as other people’s. Children engage in more extended interactions and common activities with others. They express interest in how others are treated.

Example 1

Text on screen: Engages in extended interactions and common activities with others

On screen: 35-month-old Bill is cleaning up after snack time. His caregiver sits at a table nearby and watches as Bill takes his plate to the trash to dump his uneaten food.

Caregiver 1: Good, Bill. Yes. Bill’s cleaning up. Nice. There you go. Food goes in the trash. Where does that go?

On screen: Bill looks at his caregiver and holds up his empty plate. The caregiver points to a spot on the counter.

Caregiver 1: Put it over there.

On screen: Bill puts his plate where she points.

Caregiver 1: What about your cup?

On screen: Bill grabs his cup off the table and empties it into the sink.

Caregiver 1: Mmhmm. Thank you, Bill. Nice, Bill.

On screen: The caregiver points next to the plates, and Bill sets his cup down.

Caregiver 1: Ok, cup over there, and then wash your hands. Do you need help?

On screen: Bill steps onto a stepstool at the sink and leans forward to dispense soap into his hand.

Caregiver 1: You can do it.

Example 2

Text on screen: Engages in common activities with others and communicates about their own needs and intentions

On screen: 23-month-old Amaya stands next to her caregiver, who is sitting and folding towels and washcloths. Amaya holds a small towel and looks at the piles of folded items on a low table.

Amaya: Choose?

Caregiver 2: Choose?

Amaya: Choose another one.

Caregiver 2: Oh, you want to choose another one. You can choose another one.

On screen: Amaya tries to fold her towel. She gives up. The caregiver picks up another towel and holds it out toward Amaya.

Amaya: But I—I–

Caregiver 2: Do you want this one?

Amaya: Yeah.

On screen: The caregiver reaches for Amaya’s towel.

Caregiver 2: Can I have this one?

On screen: The other towel falls to the floor. Amaya bends down to pick it up.

Caregiver 2: Or do you want both?

On screen: Amaya gives her towel to the caregiver and begins trying to fold the other towel.

Amaya: Here you go.

Caregiver 2: Thank you.

On screen: The caregiver continues quickly folding laundry. Amaya holds the towel up to show her caregiver.

Amaya: I have this one.

Caregiver 2: You have that one, and I have this one.

Amaya: And you have those that.

Caregiver 2: Yeah, that one. I already folded that one.

On screen: Amaya holds her towel toward the caregiver.

Amaya: Oh. (Inaudible) fold that one.

Caregiver 2: You want me to fold that one?

Amaya: Yeah.

Caregiver 2: OK. Can I see it? Thank you.

On screen: Amaya passes a towel to her caregiver, who quickly folds it and adds it to a pile.

Text on screen: Engages in extended interactions with others

On screen: 29-month-old Mia and 27-month-old Vera sit at a table. Vera uses a spatula and a bowl of rocks to pretend to cook.

Mia: Vera, can I eat with you?

Vera: I cooking.

Mia: Vera?

On screen: Vera knocks two rocks out of her bowl. She tries to get one of the rocks but cannot reach.

Vera: Oh no.

On screen: Mia picks up the rock and puts it back in the bowl.

Mia: Oh, (inaudible) here you go.

Vera: Thanks.

Mia: You’re welcome.

On screen: Vera stretches to get the other rock and puts it back in the bowl.

Vera: Now I got it.

Text on screen: Shows interest in how others are treated

On screen: Another child, 32-month-old Jet, approaches the table.

Jet: Vera, Vera! Can I have rock?

Vera: No.

On screen: Vera shakes her head and scowls.

Jet: Please?

Vera: OK.

On screen: Vera shrugs and picks up a rock.

Jet: Gimme, gimme, gimme!

On screen: Jet reaches out eagerly. Vera gently tosses the rock toward him, but it falls to the floor. Mia looks to the floor briefly. She reaches into Vera’s bowl of rocks.

Mia: Please, give me another rock.

On screen: Mia passes another rock to Jet.

Mia: Here you go.

Jet: Thanks!
