Social and Emotional Development Foundation 2.1: Social Understanding

Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Social Interactions includes the foundation Social Understanding. Children from 11 through 23 months show that they know how to get familiar people to respond in specific ways. Children interact with familiar people in more complex and prosocial ways.

Example 1

Text on screen: Interacts with familiar people in fairly complex, prosocial ways and gets them to respond in specific ways

On screen: 16-month-old Riley and her caregiver sit in a playhouse. There are many baby dolls and stuffies around them. Riley points at a stuffed doll off screen.

Riley: (vocalizes)

Caregiver 1: Oh, baby?

On screen: The caregiver offers Riley the doll.

Riley: (laughing)

On screen: Riley joyfully reaches for the doll, hugs it close, then hands it back to the caregiver. Riley points toward the dolls again.

Caregiver 1: (in Cantonese) Which one? This one? This one?

On screen: The caregiver offers Riley another stuffed doll. Riley hugs the doll, pats its back, and hands it back to the caregiver. She points again.

Riley: (vocalizes)

Caregiver 1: (in English) (inaudible) All done? Okay. All done.

On screen: The caregiver offers Riley a stuffed bear. Riley hugs and pats the bear and passes it back to the caregiver.

Caregiver 1: All done, thank you.

On screen: 16-month-old Maya and 11-month-old Milla sit facing each other. Milla holds up a blue color viewer and looks through it at Maya. Maya holds up a mirror and tries to look at Milla through it. Maya lowers the mirror, looks at Milla, and smiles and claps her hands.

Maya: (happy vocalizing)

On screen: Milla turns and smiles at a caregiver off screen.

Caregiver 2: There we go, Milla. Peekaboo.

On screen: Then she holds the color viewer out to Maya. Maya takes the color viewer and looks at Milla looks through it. She lowers the viewer and claps her hand against it.

Maya: Yay!

Caregiver 2: See you, Milla.

On screen: Maya and Milla look at each other, wiggle and smile, then clap their hands and look at their caregiver.

Maya & Milla: (vocalizing together)

On screen: 21-month-old August stands facing his caregiver. The caregiver holds a wooden block in one hand. August rhythmically taps it with another block as he and the caregiver interact.

Caregiver 3: You want the same song? Or you want a new song?

August: (inaudible)

Caregiver 3: So you’re gonna do A-B-C song?

On screen: August glances up at his caregiver.

August: Yeah.

Caregiver 3: (singing) A-B-C-D—

On screen: August pauses tapping the block and shakes his head.

August: No.

Caregiver 3: No? Oh, OK. (singing) Twinkle twinkle–

On screen: August taps the block again. Then he stops and shakes his head.

August: No.

Caregiver 3: No? No? OK. Wheels on the bus?

On screen: August shakes his head again.

August: No.

Caregiver 3: No? OK. What song?

On screen: August quickly looks up at the caregiver then looks away and shakes his head.

August: No.

Caregiver 3: No? If You’re Happy and You Know It?

On screen: August starts tapping the block again.

Caregiver 3: (singing) If you’re happy and you know–

On screen: August shakes his head one more time.

Caregiver 3: No? OK.

Example 4

Text on screen: Interacts with familiar people in fairly complex, prosocial ways and gets them to respond in specific ways

On screen: 23-month-old Millie stands straddling a ride-on toy as she looks through a window in a fence. Her father stands on the other side of the fence. They wave at each other through the window.

Father: Love you.

On screen: Millie’s father taps the window with his fingers, and Millie copies him. He waves to her again and makes a circular gesture.

Father: Bye. Go around again? Go. I’ll wait for you.

On screen: Millie sits on the ride-on toy, grasps the handlebars, and moves the toy backward and forward lightly. She pauses and looks at her father again.

Father: Go! Go, go, go, go!

On screen: 21-month-old Milani walks over and looks through the window at Millie’s father.

Milani: Ah.

Father: Hi. What?

On screen: Milani squats and looks through the slats of the fence. Then she pops back up to look through the window. Milani leans around the window frame and peeks at Millie’s father through fence slats.

Father: Hi.

Milani: Hi.

On screen: Millie stands up and walks to the window.

Father: Bye.

On screen: She smiles and waves at her father.

Millie: Bye!

On screen: Milani and Millie wave through the window.

Father: Bye!

Milani: Bye!

Father: See you guys later.
