Social and Emotional Development Foundation 1.4: Regulating Emotions and Behaviors

Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Self includes the foundation Regulating Emotions and Behaviors. Children from 11 through 23 months use various ways to comfort themselves and avoid or ignore situations that cause discomfort. They need support to manage strong emotions and respond to choices and expectations caregivers set. Children also communicate their feelings and wants.

Example 1

Text on screen: Ignores situations that cause discomfort. Responsive to choices and expectations set by caregivers.

On screen: 21-month-old Felix holds the bottom block in a tower of four blocks. A peer picks up a block from the table, knocks over Felix’s tower. Felix begins to rebuild the tower.

Caregiver 1: (in Cantonese) It falls down? Do you want to help him?

On screen: Felix reaches under the table for another block.

Caregiver 1: Do you want to help? Falling down? Why don’t you make one, one that won’t fall down? Come on, Bina. Let’s do it. Bina, look.

On screen: As Felix adds tries to another block to the tower, the other child knocks the blocks down again.

Child 1: Falling down.

On screen: Felix looks at the child in annoyance.

Caregiver 1: Ah! What should we do? Help him, okay?

Child 1: Yeah.

Caregiver 1: Yeah, let’s help him. Oh, give it to him. Put it on top, ah, put it on top. Yes. Put it.

On screen: Felix puts a block on the tower. The caregiver points at the top, and the other child places a block there. The other child and caregiver call out the colors of the blocks.

Child 1: Yellow and blue!

Caregiver 1: Yes, yellow, green!

Child 1: Yellow!

Caregiver 1: Yeah!

On screen: The other child places a fourth block on the tower. Felix looks at tower then looks toward the other child and claps his hands.

Text on screen: Communicates feelings and wants with gestures and words

On screen: 23-month-old Millie looks at her father through a window in a fence. She touches the window. Another child, Milani, walks over and stands next to her. Millie’s father reaches through the fence to tickle Millie.

Millie: Hi.

Father: Hi, girls.

Children: (vocalizing)

On screen: Millie steps away from the fence. As Millie walks away, Milani puts her hand against the window. Millie’s father taps the window over Milani’s hand.

Father: Ok, bye, mama. Bye.

On screen: Millie turns toward her father and waves. Then, she points toward the other side of the play area trying to get her father to play more.

Millie: (inaudible)

Text on screen: Responsive to choices set by caregiver

Father: No, no more.

Millie: Some more!

Father: No, no, no.

On screen: Millie stomps her foot and twirls her hair with her hand.

Millie: Why?

On screen: She scowls slightly and looks upset.

Millie: (unhappy vocalizing)… OK.

On screen: Millie’s moon shifts back to happy as she smiles and calmly walks away.

Text on screen: Needs support managing strong emotions. Responsive to choices set by caregivers.

On screen: 22-month-old Milani, 23-month-old Zuri, and a caregiver are in a play area where a bench is being used as a doll bed. Zuri leans over the bench and picks up the baby doll. Milani reaches out for the doll.

Milani: Me baby. No, me baby!

Caregiver 2: It’s your baby?

Milani: Yeah.

On screen: Zuri walks away with the doll, and Milani scrunches her face up in a pout and begins to cry.

Caregiver 2: Zuri’s taking?

Milani: (crying) Zuri!

Caregiver 2: Milani, you put it down. And that’s why she took him. She didn’t know it was yours.

On screen: The care educator gently holds Milani’s hand. Milani points after Zuri and looks up at the caregiver.

(xylophone playing)

Caregiver 2: Jana is bringing more babies. She went to look in Mulberryclassroom: .

On screen: As the caregiver speaks, Milani shifts her hold on the caregiver’s hand and continues looking sad.

Caregiver 2: She’s gonna bring us more babies. We only have one baby. And so many children that want that baby.

(xylophone playing)

Caregiver 2: OK? Jana will be right back.

(xylophone playing)

On screen: Milani leans into the care educator. The caregiver rubs Milani’s tummy while holding her hand.

Milani: (vocalizing)

On screen: Milani perks up and points off-screen.

Caregiver 2: Xylophone? Wanna go see?

On screen: Milani nods.

Caregiver 2: Let’s go.
