Social and Emotional Development Foundation 1.1: Sense of Identity and Belonging

Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Self includes the foundation Sense of Identity and Belonging. Children from 4 through 11 months show developing understanding that they are both separate from and connected to other people.

Text on screen: Shows developing understanding of being separate from and connected to others

On screen: 10-month-old Audrey is in a low feeding chair eating from a plate of strawberries and eggs. Three older children sit at a nearby table. Their caregiver supervises as they all eat breakfast.

Caregiver 1: Is that yummy? Ooh, you almost finished your milk.

On screen: Audrey swipes the strawberries away and eats a piece of egg.

Caregiver 1: Audrey?

On screen: Audrey looks up at the sound of her name. She smiles and kicks her feet.

Caregiver 1: (laughing) You like the eggs? You’re fishing for those eggs in there.

On screen: 11-month-old Ke’Ontae is crawling on the floor. His caregiver is on her hands and knees several feet behind him. Ke’Ontae goes to a low shelf and pulls a tub of sensory toys toward himself.

Caregiver 2: Ke’Ontae! Ke’Ontae!

On screen: Ke’Ontae lets go of the sensory toys, smiles, and turns back toward his caregiver.

Caregiver 2: Ke’Ontae! Hi, Ke’Ontae!

Ke’Ontae: (vocalizing)

Caregiver 2: Hi, Ke’Ontae!

Ke’Ontae: (vocalizing)

On screen: Ke’Ontae turns away from his caregiver and reaches for a toy on the floor.

On screen: 9-month-old Skye is in her mother’s arms at morning drop off. Skye’s caregiver turns to her and holds out her hands.

Caregiver 3: You ready?

Mother: Okay. Let me give you (inaudible) first. All right. All right.

On screen: Skye leans toward her caregiver, who takes a hold of her. Skye settles into her caregiver’s arms but quickly begins to cry as her mother prepares to leave.

Skye: (beginning to cry)

Caregiver 3: You want to follow mama?

Mother: Yeah, we’ll go together?

On screen: As Skye’s mother walks to the door, the caregiver follows with Skye in her arms.

Mother: Goodbye, Skye.

Caregiver 3: Go say goodbye.

Skye: (continued crying)

Mother: I love you!

On screen: After waving goodbye to Skye’s mom, the caregiver soothes Skye and walks back into the playroom.

Caregiver 3: She’s gonna be back. I know.

Skye: (crying)
