Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Self includes the foundation Sense of Identity and Belonging. Children from 23 through 36 months identify their feelings, needs, and interests. They sometimes identify themselves and others as members of one or more groups.

On screen: 36-month-old Abraham sits in an enclosed cozy nook with 30-month-old Brooklynn. Their caregiver sits just outside the nook. The caregiver reads and describes activity cards as Abraham shows them to her.
Caregiver 1: Ah, she’s laying down. She’s relaxing. You found another one?
On screen: Abraham gives a card to the caregiver. She holds it up and reads it.
Caregiver 1: Oh! I can get in the cozy cube.
On screen: The caregiver points at Abraham and then the nook.
Caregiver 1: Just like you. You’re inside the cozy cube. Yeah. Look at this one.
On screen: Abraham smiles. Brooklynn gives the caregiver a card. The caregiver holds the card up.
Caregiver 1: What is this one? (gasping) What is she doing? Look.
Abraham: Jumping.
Caregiver 1: It’s jumping. Jumping high. Yeah. When I feel happy, I like to jump.
On screen: Abraham raises his hand in agreement.
Abraham: I like to jump.
Caregiver 1: Do you like to jump, too? Yeah.

On screen: 31-month-old Lucy and a caregiver look at framed photos of children. As Lucy points at photos, she names the people.
Lucy: Look, that Ruby, and that (inaudible), and that (inaudible).
Caregiver 2: Uh-huh.
Lucy: And that’s Melly.
Caregiver 2: Mm-hmm.
On screen: Lucy stops pointing and looks closer at the pictures.
Lucy: And I want me.
Caregiver 2: I don’t know, where are you?
On screen: Lucy looks carefully at the photos.
Caregiver 2: Is that you?
On screen: The caregiver points at a photo.
Lucy: No, that Melly.
Caregiver 2: OK. Let me see. Is…
On screen: Lucy points at a photo of herself.
Lucy: That you!
Caregiver 2: There you are.

Zoe: He’s right here.
Caregiver 3: Oh, there’s your daddy.
Zoe: And he’s wet in a pool. And (inaudible). Look at my mama.
Caregiver 3: Yeah, there’s your mommy. Where are you?
Zoe: And Ethan. And my grandma and grandpa’s not (inaudible). And grandma knows me. Oh, that’s my titi.
