Social and Emotional Development Foundation 1.1: Sense of Identity and Belonging

Narrator: In the Social and Emotional Development domain, the strand Self includes the foundation Sense of Identity and Belonging. Children from 11 through 23 months show awareness of their own features. They also communicate that they are distinct from others. Within their relationships with caregivers, they show awareness of others.

Text on screen: Shows awareness of their own features

On screen: 18-month-old Yohann crouches in front of a large mirror set up outside. He is close to the mirror, with both hands on its surface. He looks at his reflection. Then, he looks at what is going on around him. He looks back at his reflection, examining his eyes the shape of his face. He hears a sound nearby and looks away from the mirror again.

Text on screen: Shows awareness of their own features

On screen: 23-month-old Millie sits in a mirrored nook under an indoor play structure. She looks at her reflection then peeks out at her caregiver. The caregiver turns to smile at her, and Millie goes back to studying her reflection.

Caregiver 1: Yeah, Millie’s hiding inside.

On screen: Millie begins to crawl out of the mirrored nook toward her caregiver, carrying a baby doll.

Caregiver 1: Hi, you coming back outside?

On screen: Millie sits beside her caregiver, smiling up at her.

Caregiver 1: What did you see inside?

On screen: Millie notices a round mirror on the outside of the play structure. She goes to the mirror and sits with her face very close to it.

Caregiver 1: You saw yourself in the mirror?

Millie: Hi.

Caregiver 1: I see. Hi.

On screen: Millie holds her doll up to the mirror. The caregiver turns and points at Millie and smiles. Millie points at her reflection in the mirror.

Millie: Right there.

Caregiver 1: I see you!

On screen: Millie quickly turns around and then back to the mirror.

Millie: I see you, Laura.

Caregiver 1: I see you, too, Millie.

Text on screen: Shows awareness of others, within their relationship with caregivers

On screen: Millie beings to point at the mirror, naming all the reflections she sees, beginning with her caregiver.

Millie: Hi, Noah?

On screen: The caregiver looks and points off screen.

Caregiver 1: Noah?

Millie: Noah?

Caregiver 1: On the other side?

Millie: (inaudible)

Caregiver 1: I think that’s..

Millie: Chi-chi?

Caregiver 1: Archie, Archie. Yes.

On screen: Millie scoots away from the mirror and toward her caregiver to let another child into the play structure.

Millie: (inaudible vocalizing)

On screen: Millie leans on her caregiver, tapping her arm and gently tugging her shirt sleeve.

Caregiver 1: Yeah? You see – who do you see?

Text on screen: Shows awareness of their own features and shows awareness of others, within relationships with their caregivers

On screen: 23-month-old Zuri, 22-month-old Milani, and their caregiver are outside. Milani and the caregiver each hold baby dolls. Zuri holds a hat.

Zuri: Want my baby.

On screen: Zuri gently hands her caregiver the hat she is holding.

Caregiver 2: What do you want to do with your baby?

On screen: The caregiver takes the hat and sets it beside her, still holding up the baby doll.

Zuri: Yeah.

Caregiver 2: Did you see the belly button of the baby? Where’s the belly button?

On screen: Zuri steps forward and points to the belly button on the caregiver’s doll. Milani points to the belly button of the doll she is holding.

Caregiver 2: Yeah. Where’s your belly button?

On screen: The caregiver points toward Zuri. Zuri lifts her shirt, showing off her belly button. Milani touches her own belly, then pulls at her one-piece outfit, trying to show her belly button.

Caregiver 2: (laughing) Do you have? Yeah, it’s hard to see on you, huh? What about his ear? Where is it?

On screen: The caregiver holds the doll up. Zuri uses both hands to point to both of the doll’s ears.

Caregiver 2: You see? Oh, it’s there.

On screen: The caregiver looks at Milani.

Caregiver 2: Where is Milani’s ear?

On screen: Miliani touches her ear, and Zuri mimics her, touching her own ears.

Caregiver 2: Mmm, his nose? Where his nose?

On screen: Milani hugs her baby doll. She holds it out and touches its nose and then her own nose. Zuri takes the doll from the caregiver’s hands and touches its nose.

Caregiver 2: Where’s… Yeah, it’s your nose is over here.
