Perceptual and Motor Development

Narrator: The Perceptual and Motor Development domain includes the strand Motor Development. In the first four months, infants begin to gain some control of large muscles. They are also slowly gaining control of small muscles.

Example 1

Text on screen: Moves both arms and legs spontaneously

On screen: 4-month-old Anaya lies on her back on a blanket. Her mother kneels next to her. Anaya joyfully moves her arms and legs as she smiles at her mom.

Anaya: (grunting)

Mother: Gonna try to roll over?

Example 2

Text on screen: Grasps and holds things placed in their hand

On screen: 4-month-old Endrick sits on his caregiver’s lap, holding her finger with one hand. He opens and closes his other hand.

Caregiver 1: (speaking Spanish) Yes. Look. Oh. And you caught my finger, my index finger. Look, you caught my finger. And again, you have my index finger. This one is used for pointing and helps us to communicate.

On screen: Endrick brings his free hand to the caregiver’s finger and stares intently at it. He continues opening and closing his hands. His caregiver says,

Caregiver: You are squeezing my finger. Very hard. I can see it.

Example 3

Text on screen: Grasps and holds things placed in their hand

On screen: 3-month-old Zoe is on her father’s lap as he sits on the floor. Her mother sits next to them. Zoe’s mother holds up a ball with holes. Zoe grasps and holds on to the ball with both hands.

Mother: (speaking Spanish) Let’s see. Do it again. Throw it. Catch it. Aha. Very good. Drop it. Let’s see. Throw it. Give me the ball. Give it to me. Yes. Give it to me.

On screen: Zoe continues holding the ball as her father repositions her on his lap.

Mother: Drop it. Yes. Give it to me.

Example 4

Text on screen: Lifts head when placed on tummy

On screen: 1-month-old Amara lies curled up on her tummy on her mother’s chest. Her eyes are open as she listens to her mother’s voice.

Mother: I know. After eating, not time for tummies.

On screen: Amara lifts her head up slowly and then puts her head back down again.

Mother: Ah-ha. Ah? You gonna give it a shot? No. Sí?

On screen: Amara slowly lifts her head again and then turns to look up at her mother’s face.

Mother: (laughing) You’re giving it a shot. Look at you go. Yeah. There you go.
