Perceptual Motor Development Foundation 2.2: Fine Motor Development

Narrator: In the Perceptual and Motor Development domain, the strand Motor Development includes the foundation Fine Motor Development. Children from 11 through 23 months use both hands together to manipulate objects.

Example 1

Text on screen: Uses both hands together to manipulate objects

On screen: 18-month-old Elian sits surrounded by musical instruments. In one hand, he holds a stick with bells attached.

Elian bangs the bells on the ground.

(bells jingling)

On screen: Elian drops the bells and reaches toward a pair of cymbals. He picks up one cymbal in each hand at the same time.

Elian looks at each cymbal, smiles, and begins banging them together.

(cymbals clanging)

On screen: He looks at the cymbals and holds them out to show someone who is off camera before he begins banging them again.

Elian: (vocalizing excitedly)

(cymbals clanging)

Example 2

Text on screen: Uses both hands together to manipulate objects

On screen: 17-month-old Aarini squats on the floor in an indoor play area. She is holding a hat and has a stuffed toy dog on the floor in front of her. Using both hands she picks up the dog, turns it over, and puts it down.

She uses both hands to stretch the hat open and tries to put it on the dog. Aarini turns the dog over again and puts it down. With both hands, she places the hat on the dog’s head.

Aarini pulls on the hat, and it comes off. Using both hands she opens the hat again and turns the dog over. She gently lays the hat on top of the dog using both hands.

Text on screen: Uses both hands together to manipulate objects

On screen: 18-month-old Isabella sits at a table next to her caregiver. She is playing with three nesting cups. She holds the medium and large cups, one in each hand, and watches the small cup roll on its side. She captures the small cup between the cups in her hands.

Isabella lets go of the medium cup to grab the small cup. The medium cup rolls away from her. She reaches out to grasp it with her right hand.

Caregiver 1: Oh, that was cool, huh? How it rolled.

Isabella: (quiet vocalizing)

On screen: Isabella picks up the medium cup and places it right side up in front of her. She reaches for the small cup with her right hand while holding he large cup in her left. She brings both cups together on top of the medium cup. She moves the large cup away and places the small cup inside the medium cup.

Isabella spins the nested cups with her right hand and moves the small cup up and down in the medium cup a few times. Then she takes the small cup out with her right hand and places the large cup on top of the medium cup with her left. She puts the small cup inside the large cup.
