Narrator: The Perceptual and Motor Development domain includes the strand Perceptual Development. From birth, infants are continually making sense of new sounds, sights, sensations, smells, and tastes. Using their senses they learn about people, routines, and the world around them.

Text on screen: Responds by calming down when held close and patted
On screen: 2-month-old Stella cries while cradled in her mother’s arms. As Stella continues crying, her mother looks at her with concern, gently bounces her, and tries to console her.
Stella: (crying)
Mother: What? Oh.
Stella: (continued crying)
Mother: Yeah?
On screen: Stella’s mother repositions her. She briefly holds Stella up to look at her face . Then she moves Stella to rest upright against her chest. Stella stops crying as her mother gently pats and rubs her back.
Stella: (stops crying)

Text on screen: Tracks moving objects with their eyes
On screen: 4-month-old Anaya lies on her back on a blanket. Her father sits leaning over her, and Anaya watches his shiny necklace that dangles in front of her. Then she looks around and focuses on a ball in her hand. She moves the ball around on the floor. It rolls away and she follows it with her eyes.
Father: (inaudible)
Anaya: (vocalizes)
On screen: Anaya looks at her father. He brings the ball back to her and holds it above her face. She grasps it and focuses on it as she extends her arm, moving the ball over her head. Then she focuses on her father’s necklace again as it slowly swings in front of her.

Text on screen: Tracks moving objects with their eyes
On screen: 1-month-old Amara lies on her back on a blanket. She looks up at her mother, who sits next to her holding a toy. Amara follows the toy with her eyes as her mother lightly shakes it in front of her, slowly moving it from one side to the other.
Mother: There you go. There you go. Yeah.

Text on screen: Maintains focus on high contrast objects
On screen: 2-month-old Stella looks at a black and white picture book while cradled in her mother’s arm.
Mother: What’s that? That the star and the moon? What about this one?
On screen: Stella focuses on the images in the book as her mom names the pictures.
Mother: Grapes. Grapes. Should we see what’s on the other side?
On screen: Stella holds her focus on the book as her mother turns the book to show the pictures on the other side.
Mother: A strawberry.
