Narrator: In the Perceptual and Motor Development domain the strand Perceptual Development includes the foundation Perceptual Development. Children from 4 through 11 months use their senses to explore and learn about objects and people.

Example 1

Text on screen: Uses senses to explore and learn about objects

On screen: In an open play area, 9-month-old Audrey sits on a rug playing with toy fruit in a toy pot.

Audrey: (vocalizing)

On screen: Audrey holds a toy strawberry in her hands. She puts it in the pot. She picks up the strawberry again and looks at it. She pokes the toy strawberry with one finger and puts it to her mouth. She places one leg on top of the pot.

Example 2

Text on screen: Uses senses to explore and learn about objects and people

On screen: In an outdoor play yard, 8-month-old Matthew lies on his back on a blanket. He holds a teething toy in both hands. His caregiver kneels next to him and talks with someone off screen.

Matthew looks at the toy in his hands. He turns his head and looks in the direction of the talking. He brings the toy to his mouth and chews on a loop on the toy. He removes the toy from his mouth, looks at it, and shakes it. He brings it to his mouth and chews on the loop. He looks in the direction of the talking again and then looks at his caregiver.

Matthew pulls the toy from his mouth, holds it with one hand, and looks at it. He shakes it again. He touches the loop on the toy with his other hand.

Text on screen: Uses senses to explore and learn about objects and people

On screen: In a play area, 9-month-old Michael is on his hands and knees. His caregiver kneels next to him. They are looking at each other. The caregiver moves her hand across some mats that contain colored water. The water moves inside the mats.

Caregiver 1: Oh look at that. It’s the water.

On screen: Michael smiles and reaches out to the mat in front of him. He crawls across the first mat and pats the next one. He looks at his caregiver. The caregiver smiles at Michael and moves her hand across the second mat. Michael watches her then turns to swipe his hand across the third mat. He crawls onto the third mat then sees a toy egg and picks it up.
