Language Development Foundation 3.1: Engagement With Books, Stories, Songs, and Rhymes

Narrator: In the Language Development domain, the strand Early Literacy includes the foundation Engagement With Books, Stories, Songs, and Rhymes. Children from 4 through 11 months watch or listen to a caregiver sharing a brief story, book, song, or rhyme.

Example 1

Text on screen: Listens to and watches caregiver singing

On screen: 10-month-old Kailani sits on the floor facing her caregiver. Her caregiver acts out the verses as she sings “The Wheels on the Bus.” Kailani watches her intently.

Caregiver 1: (singing) The doors on the bus go open and shut. Open and shut, open and shut. The doors on the bus go open and shut, all through the town.

On screen: Kailani leans in closer and watches her caregiver’s fingers move back and forth like windshield wipers for the next verse.

Caregiver 1: The wipers on the bus go — Kailani — swish swish swish. Swish swish swish, swish swish swish. The wipers on the bus go swish swish swish, all through the town.

On screen: Kailani continues to watch and listen intently.

Caregiver 1: The people on the bus go up and down, up and down, up and down. The people on the bus go up and down, all through the town. Yeah!

Example 2

Text on screen: Explores books

On screen: 10-month-old Audrey sits on the floor in front of a crate of books. She holds the edge of the crate with one hand and touches the books with the other.

Audrey reaches into the crate and pulls out a soft book. She looks at the book, turns it in her hands, and chews on it. She drops the book back into the crate and pulls out another book. She looks at it, puts it on the edge of the crate, and pats at the cover. The book slides onto the floor.

Audrey pulls out another book, looks at it, and lets it fall on the floor. She pulls out one more book, looks at it, and tosses it aside. She picks up one of the books she dropped.

Example 3

Text on screen: Explores books and pictures together with caregiver

On screen: 6- month-old Amelia lies on her belly on a rug. Her caregiver is sitting next to her. There is a board book on the ground in front of them. The caregiver sets another book down and takes the first one away. Amelia watches with interest as the caregiver opens the book and talks about the pictures.

Caregiver 2: My food.

On screen: Amelia wiggles her arms and legs in excitement as she looks at the book.

Caregiver 2: What’s this? It’s a yellow banana.

On screen: Amelia reaches out and touches the pages.

Caregiver 2: Look. Yellow banana. We love bananas.

On screen: The caregiver turns the page, and Amelia reaches out to touch the book again.

Caregiver 2: Green broccoli.

Amelia: (vocalizing)

Caregiver 2: Yeah. And purple plum. Yum yum yum yum.

Amelia: (vocalizing)

Caregiver 2: And we have bread here. Next page.

On screen: The caregiver turns the page and moves the book toward Amelia. Amelia grasps the book and pulls it closer, lifting it. She puts it back down and flips the open page back and forth.

Caregiver 2: Mm-hmm. Turning the pages? Yeah.

Example 4

Text on screen: Watches and listens as caregiver reads a book

On screen: 11-month-old River and an older child sit in their caregiver’s lap. River watches intently as the caregiver reads a book and points out details of the illustrations.

Caregiver 3: Say, Teacher, teacher, what do you see? I see children looking at me. There’s a lot of children there. Children, children, what do you see? What are the children going to see? (gasping) I see a brown bear, a red bird, a yellow duck, blue horse, green frog, purple cat, white dog…
