Language Development

Narrator: The Language Development domain includes the strand Communicating. From birth, infants produce sounds to communicate their needs. They also make sounds to initiate communication and respond to others.

Example 1

Text on screen: Responds in a back-and-forth manner

On screen: 4-month-old Anaya is with her parents on a couch. Her father holds her up to stand in his lap so she is facing him. She coos and trills her lips, and he does the same in response. The two continue to joyfully respond to one another by trilling their lips.

Anaya: (vocalizing)

Father: Uh-huh.

Anaya: (vocalizing)

Father: Huh?

Anaya: (vocalizing)

Father: (trilling)

Anaya: (trilling)

On screen: Anaya’s father raises his eyebrows and smiles as he trills. Ayana looks at his chest, mouth, and eyes as her mother laughs.

Mother and Father: (laughing)

Father: (trilling)

Anaya: (loud vocalizing)

On screen: Anaya looks around. Her father continues looking in her eyes. They meet eyes as she vocalizes, and her mother joins in.

Father: Hi.

Anaya: (vocalizing)

Text on screen: Coos in response to others

On screen: 3-month-old Zoe lies on her back on a blanket and looks up at her mother, who sits in front of her. Zoes smiles and vocalizes in response to her mother’s playful vocalizations.

Mother: (trilling) Ahh, goo. Ahh goo. (trilling)

Zoe: (vocalizing)

Mother: Sí! (laughing and trilling) Sí!

Text on screen: Responds in a back-and-forth manner

On screen: 3-month-old Noah lies on a blanket facing his mother, who sits nearby on the floor. Noah and his mother smile at each other. As his mother speaks to him, Noah responds with vocalizations in an extended back-and-forth interaction. Noah sucks on his knuckle and kicks as he vocalizes.

Mother: Hi. Oh, thank you for the smile.

Mother: Thank you.

Noah: (vocalizing)

Mother: Yeah?

Noah: (vocalizing)

Mother: Uh-huh.

Noah: (vocalizing)

Mother: Does it taste good? Yum.

Noah: (vocalizing)

On screen: Noah briefly removes his hand from his mouth and smiles widely at his mother. He continues looking at her, kicking, and vocalizing.

Mother: Wow.

Noah: (extended vocalizing)

Mother: Are you telling me all about your day?

Noah: (continued vocalizing)

Mother: Yeah.

Noah: (continued vocalizing)

Mother: Yeah, look. You just have to put that leg over.

Noah: (vocalizing)

Mother: Yeah.

Noah: (vocalizing)

Mother: Uh huh.

Noah: (vocalizing)

Mother: I go goo? You like hearing yourself?

Noah: (vocalizing)

Mother: You’ve got so much to say. Having such a nice conversation.

Noah: (vocalizing)

Mother: (laughing)
