Narrator: In the Language Development domain, the strand Communicating includes the foundation Emerging Conversation Skills. Children from 4 through 11 months participate in back-and-forth communication using gestures, facial expressions, and sometimes limited verbal responses.

On screen: 11-month-old Ke’Ontae sits secured in an infant feeding chair. His caregiver sits in front of him holding a bowl of food and a spoon. Ke’Ontae frowns, watching his caregiver get a spoon full of food.
Ke’Ontae: (dissatisfied vocalizing)
Caregiver 1: (laughing) What is wrong with you? I don’t why you laughing.
On screen: The caregiver holds up the spoon, and Ke’Ontae opens his mouth wide. The caregiver feeds him and cleans some food from his face.
Caregiver 1: What happened? What happened, guy?
On screen: The caregiver leans in closer to Ke’Ontae, making eye contact with him. Ke’Ontae smiles at her.
Caregiver 1: What happened?
On screen: The caregiver leans back, then leans back in.
Caregiver 1: Yup.
On screen: Ke’Ontae smiles and maintains eye contact, vocalizing in response as his caregiver speaks to him.
Ke’Ontae: (happy vocalizing)
Caregiver 1: No? You full?
Ke’Ontae: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 1: No?
On screen: The caregiver feeds Ke’Ontae another spoonful of food. He accepts the food but then begins shaking his head no. The caregiver shakes her head, too.
Caregiver 1: No, no. No, no.

On screen: 11-month-old Olaseni sits outdoors near his caregiver. He pulls a wooden teething ring out of a basket and puts it in his mouth.
Olaseni: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 2: You found a ring? Yeah.
On screen:
Olaseni babbles as he lifts and lowers the ring.
Olaseni: (vocalizing excitedly)
On screen: His caregiver pulls another ring out of the basket and holds it in front of Olaseni.
Olaseni: (vocalizing excitedly)
On screen: They tap their rings together, then Olaseni holds both rings.
Caregiver 2: Two rings.
Olaseni: (vocalizing)
On screen: A loud car drives by in the background, and Olaseni notices the noise. Olaseni looks at his caregiver and continues to babble in response as she talks to him.
Caregiver 2: Do you hear it? I hear vroom, right? It was a car passing by.
Olaseni: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 2: Vroom.
Olaseni: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 2: Car. It was a car.
Olaseni: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 2: Yeah.

On screen: 10-month-old Audrey kneels in front of a door with a low window. She points and looks at her caregiver sitting next to her. As the caregiver begins to talk to her, Audrey actively responds with sounds and gestures.
Caregiver 3: You want to go outside?
Audrey: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 3: OK. We will.
On screen: Audrey smiles at her caregiver and puts her hands on the door. She kneels, looks at the caregiver again, and points at the window.
Caregiver 3: (laughs) What can you see outside? I see cars. And I see…
Audrey: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 3: Outside. You like to go outside.
On screen: Audrey pats the door with her hands, looks out the window. She looks at the caregiver and points at the door.
Audrey: (excited babbling)
Caregiver 3: Yes. I know. And I will go with you. Want to stand up?
On screen: The caregiver reaches toward Audrey with her palm facing up. Audrey looks at the caregiver and continues to point.
Audrey: (babbling)
Caregiver 3: OK.
Audrey: (babbling)
Caregiver 3: Okay. We’ll do that.
On screen: Audrey pats the door with her hands.
Audrey: (babbling)
Caregiver 3: OK. (gasps)
On screen: Audrey’s caregiver holds her arm to steady her as she stands up. Audrey presses her hands to the window and looks back and forth from her caregiver to the window.
Audrey: Ooh.
Caregiver 3: Woah, you’re standing up! (laughing)
