Language Development Foundation 2.2: Emerging Conversation Skills

Narrator: In the Language Development domain, the strand Communicating includes the foundation Emerging Conversation Skills. Children from 11 through 23 months use gestures, words, or babbles to respond to communication or to start conversations.

Example 1

Text on screen: Uses gestures to respond to and start communication

On screen: 16-month-old Sophie and a caregiver sit together in a playhouse. Sophie is holding a doll in her lap. Another doll lies on a blanket, and a basket with more dolls sits to the side. Sophie points at the doll on the blanket, then sets her doll down on another blanket.

Caregiver 1: (in Cantonese) What is this baby doing here? What is baby doing? Baby sleeping? Hehe. Baby wants to sleep? Baby needs a blanket.

On screen: Sophie reaches for another doll, and the caregiver helps her take it from the basket.

Caregiver 1: (in English) Oh, more baby? Hi. Lay down? Baby lay down?

On screen: Sophie pulls a blanket out of the basket and holds it out to the caregiver.

Caregiver 1: (in Cantonese) Wow! A blanket.

On screen: Sophie takes the blanket back from the caregiver and tries to cover her doll with it.

Caregiver 1: Yes, oh. Cover with a blanket. Cover, is it how you cover your baby?

On screen: The caregiver adjusts the blanket so it covers Sophie’s doll.

On screen: 15-month-old Echo is sitting outside with a caregiver. There are several baskets of dolls between them. Echo holds up a small doll.

Echo: Yeah baby.

Caregiver 2: And there’s a little baby.

Echo: Yeah.

Caregiver 2: Yeah.

On screen: Echo points to a larger doll in a basket in front of her.

Echo: Baby.

Caregiver 2: Mm-hmm.

Echo: (babbling)

On screen: Echo picks up the larger doll and tosses it aside. She holds up the small doll again.

Echo: Baby.

Caregiver 2: Look at the baby. I see the baby.

Echo: Yeah.

Caregiver 2: Yeah.

On screen: Echo reaches toward another basket and picks up a new doll.

Echo: (babbling) Baby.

Caregiver 2: Mm-hmm. Yeah? Want me to hold that?

Echo: Yeah.

On screen: The caregiver reaches out for the doll, but Echo pulls it into her own lap.

Echo: (babbling) Eh ba-ba-baby.

Caregiver 2: Mm-hmm.

Echo: Baby.

On screen: 14-month-old Emiliano is sitting in front of a pile of books. A caregiver is holding up an open book.

Caregiver 3: (in Spanish) Yes.

Emiliano: (vocalizing)

Caregiver 3: Oh! And they have water. They have water there. Do you see it?

On screen: Emiliano looks up at his caregiver excitedly.

Emiliano: (vocalizes)

On screen: The caregiver turns to the next page.

Caregiver 3: Oh! The water! Oh, wow! More water. More water, Emiliano. (gasping)

On screen: Emiliano moves his hand up and down like he’s splashing water.

Emiliano: (babbling) Pah.

Caregiver 3: (in English) Splash, splash!

Emiliano: Pah. Pah.

Caregiver 3: Splash.

Example 4

On screen: 19-month-old Noah and a caregiver approach a table outdoors. The caregiver sets small bowls and trays full of ice on the table.

Noah: (babbling)

Caregiver 4: What else do we need?

On screen: Noah reaches out to touch a bowl.

Noah: We got ice.

Caregiver 4: Just this side might be really cold.

Noah: It’s the ice!

Caregiver 4: We’ve got ice.

On screen: The caregiver removes ice cubes from a tray and places them on the table.

Caregiver 4: It won’t melt as easily.

Noah: (babbling)

Caregiver 4: And one last one. Look at. This one I froze. They got stuck together. There’s a cup inside the bowl. Push, push, push.

Noah: (inaudible)

Caregiver 4: Push, push, push. And it came out. That’s it for the ice that was in here. Wanna put this up there?

On screen: The caregiver places the ice tray on a shelf.

Noah: There’s a ice.

Caregiver 4: (laughing) Should we go see if Zuri would like to come outside with us?

Noah: No.

On screen: Noah touches a fingertip to one of the ice cubes and pulls back.

Caregiver 4: I’ll ask Zuri in a little bit. You have some time with your ice.

Noah: No.

Caregiver 4: What do we do with it, though?

Noah: And I got ice. We got ice.

Caregiver 4: Ice.
