Language Development Foundation 2.1: Communicating and Speaking

Narrator: In the Language Development domain, the strand Communicating includes the foundation Communicating and Speaking. Children from 4 through 11 months explore and practice making sounds or hand shapes and use sounds or gestures to communicate.

Text on screen: Uses sounds and gestures to communicate wants and interests

On screen: 10-month-old Audrey kneels in front of a door with a low window. She points and looks from the window to her caregiver sitting next to her.

Caregiver 1: You want to go outside?

Audrey: (babbling)

Caregiver 1: Ok we will.

On screen: Audrey smiles at her caregiver, puts her hands on the door, and scoots closer to it.

Caregiver 1: (caregiver laughing) What can you see outside? I see cars…

On screen: Audrey kneels, looks at her caregiver, and points at the window.

Caregiver 1: And I see…

Audrey: (vocalizing)

Caregiver 1: Outside. You like to go outside.

On screen: Audrey pats the door insistently.

Audrey: (Babbling)

Caregiver 1: Yes. I know.

On screen: Audrey looks back toward the caregiver and points at her.

Caregiver 1: And I will go with you. Want to stand up? OK.

On screen: Audrey’s caregiver reaches toward her with a palm facing up. Audrey looks at her caregiver.

Audrey: (Insistent babbling)

Caregiver 1: Ok, we’ll do that. OK.

On screen: Audrey continues patting the door. Her caregiver supports her arm. Audrey stands up and holds onto the window, looking back and forth from her caregiver to the outside.

Audrey: Ooooh.

Caregiver 1: Woah. You’re standing up.

Text on screen: Practices making vocal sounds to communicate

On screen: 8-month-old Matthew lies on his back on a play mat under hanging toys. His caregiver kneels next to him. Matthew explores one of the toys, pulling on it then letting it go.

Matthew: (vocalizing)

Caregiver 2: Hello! I heard you, hello.

On screen: Matthew rolls onto his side and reaches for the toy again. He pulls, lets it go, and rolls onto his back.

Text on screen: Practices making vocal sounds to communicate

On screen: 11-month-old Kailani and Olaseni sit in an outdoor play area with a variety of toys and a large drum. As they play, they both vocalize and babble. Kailani holds jingle bells and an egg-shaped shaker. She turns toward Olaseni, who is playing with a pop-up toy.

Kailani: (babbling)

Olaseni: (brief babbling)

On screen: Kailani taps and slides the bells and shaker on the surface of the drum. She stands and leans on the drum.

Kailani: (extended babbling)
