Language Development Foundation 2.1: Communicating and Speaking

Narrator: In the Language Development domain, the strand Communicating includes the foundation Communication and Speaking. Children from 23 through 36 months use vocabulary about various topics and communicate in a way that a familiar person who speaks or signs the child’s language can understand.

Example 1

Text on screen: Is understood by a familiar person

On screen: 24-month-old Julia sits at a table outdoors with her caregiver and peers. She digs a shovel in the sand and looks for a cup.

Julia: Where cup?

Caregiver 1: You want a cup?

Julia: Yeah.

Caregiver 1: Ok, let’s go look in the basket over there. Do you see the basket? You want one cup?

Julia: Yeah.

Caregiver 1: OK, I’ll get you one.

On screen: Julia follows the caregiver to get a cup.

Julia: One cup.

Child 2: I want one cup.

On screen: 36-month-old Oxley hits chimes with drum sticks in an outdoor play setting.

Caregiver 2: (in Cantonese) I will ask mommy to take a look and replace the shell.

Oxley: (in Cantonese) I will hit it there?

Caregiver 2: This gong seems to be very loud, too loud, and it hurts my ears, maybe it is too close.

On screen: Oxley stops hitting the chimes.

Oxley: A little further away.

On screen: He begins to lightly hit the chimes again, tapping them on the side.

Caregiver 2: Those kinds with round balls seem to be …

Oxley: It’s quieter on the side.

Text on screen: Uses short sentences to communicate with a familiar person

On screen: 32-month-old Jet walks up to 27-month-old Vera who’s at a table, putting together a puzzle with animal shapes. He holds up a hand.

Jet: Yeah. High five. Oh, you need to put the parrot tree (inaudible). That one…

On screen: Vera picks up a snake piece, while Jet points where it should go.

Vera: (inaudible)

On screen: Jet takes the puzzle piece from Vera’s hand and shows her how to put it in its spot.

Jet: You need give me this and put it on like this. OK?

Vera: OK.

On screen: He places a Zebra piece in the correct spot on the puzzle.

Jet: And we need to put the penguin here.

On screen: He then places the penguin piece in its correct spot.

Jet: You know that I like a penguin?

Vera: This one elephant.

Jet: Yeah, and we need all the animals.

Example 4

Text on screen: Uses short sentences to communicate with a familiar person

On screen: 32-month-old Sheridan and 33-month-old Ximena are playing doctor together with a dog stuffy. Sheridan picks up a play phone and brings it to her ear.

Sheridan: I need to call somebody. Doctor, can you help Snoopy get better?

Caregiver 3: Oh, I think they will.

Ximena: My baby’s sick.

On screen: Sheridan puts the phone down, and Ximena picks up the dog and hugs it in her arms.

Sheridan: OK, I going to call the doctor.

On screen: Sheridan picks the play phone back up, bringing it to her ear.

Caregiver 3: Maybe some medicine. Did you guys already try?

Sheridan: Snoopy’s gotta go to the doctor and we gonna take them. Bye.

Ximena: Are you OK?
