Language Development Foundation 1.2: Understanding Language

Narrator: In the Language Development domain, the strand Attending and Understanding includes the foundation Understanding Language. Children from 11 through 23 months understand many words for familiar objects, people, and actions.

Example 1

Text on screen: Understands many words for familiar objects and actions

On screen: 18-month-old Alice, her caregiver, and another child are exploring plants in the yard. They are gathered around a small shrub.

Caregiver 1: Maybe Alice knows where the lemon balm is.

Alice: Um (inaudible).

On screen: Alice turns her head to look toward another part of the yard.

Caregiver 1: Let’s go see down here. Maybe we can find some down below.

On screen: Alice takes her caregiver’s hand, and they all walk to the lower part of the yard. Alice points at the lemon balm plant and leads her caregiver over to it. They stop in front of the plant.

Alice: I wanna pick them.

Caregiver 1: Quinn, Alice’s— Alice says she wants to pick some.

On screen: Alice and the caregiver pick leaves from the plant and sniff them.

Caregiver 1: Oh, that smells like lemon balm. Mmhmm. Oh, it smells so good. Quinn, did you pick any?

On screen: Alice bends down to pick a plant leaf and shows it to the other child.

Alice: Um, you can pick one here. Tiny at the ground. Yeah, tiny little leaves.

Example 2

Text on screen: Understands many words for familiar objects and actions

On screen: A caregiver kneels on the floor and picks up a small blanket. She calls out to 17-month-old Aarini, who is off screen, to come help her.

Caregiver 2: Aari. Can we put all these back in the basket please? All right.

Aarini: (vocalizing)

On screen: Aarini walks across the room, stopping to pick up another blanket.

Caregiver 2: You’ve got that one.

On screen: Aarini walks to an empty basket and puts the blanket in. The caregiver holds the other blanket out to Aarini. She takes it and puts it in the basket.

Caregiver 2: And… All right.

Example 3

Text on screen: Understands directions

On screen: 21-month-old August and 19-month-old Isaiah are in an outdoor activity area where several watering cans and teapots are spread out on a table. August puts a watering can away on a shelf. He returns to the table to get another one. A caregiver speaks from off screen.

Caregiver 3: Isaiah, are you gonna help him put it on the shelf?

On screen: Isaiah reaches for August’s watering can.

August: No!

Caregiver 3: Can you put it on the shelf?

On screen: August moves away from Isaiah. August puts the watering can on the shelf. Isaiah picks up a teapot and puts it on the shelf.
