Language Development Foundation 1.1: Being Attentive to Communication

Narrator: In the Language Development domain, the strand Attending and Understanding includes the foundation Being Attentive to Communication. Children from 4 through 11 months focus on the face, hands, or voice of a person who is communicating with them.

Text on screen: Focuses on face, hands, voice of person communicating with them

On screen: 11-month-old Sebastian sits facing his caregiver. He is mouthing a toy and looking intently at her face as she sings a good morning song in Spanish.

Caregivers 1 & 2: (singing in Spanish) Good morning. Good morning. How are you? How are you? Very well, thank you. Very well, thank you. And you? And you? Yay!

On screen: After the song ends, Sebastian looks away.

Text on screen: Focuses on hands of person communicating with them

On screen: 9-month-old Skye sits with her caregiver next to a clear tube attached to a riser. The caregiver reaches into the tube to pick up a soft ball. She taps inside the tube to get Skye’s attention. Skye looks at the hand in the tube and places her own hand on the tube. She laughs.

Caregiver 3: Skye. (fingers tapping)

Skye: (laughing)

On screen: Skye watches intently as her caregiver slowly pulls her hand out of the tube and offers Skye the ball.

Text on screen: Focuses on face of person communicating

On screen: Skye takes the ball, focuses on her caregiver’s face to look into her eyes, and looks back at the ball.

Caregiver 3: Yeah. And here it is! Yeah.

Text on screen: Focuses on voice of the person communicating with them and follows person’s gestures

On screen: 9-month-old Aaliyah sits in her caregiver’s lap, facing outward. The caregiver speaks to a child nearby.

Caregiver 4: Are you looking at your – are you looking at the reflection?

On screen: The caregiver begins playing peek-a-boo with Aaliyah, holding a sheer scarf in front of Aaliyah’s face and then dropping it down. Aaliyah watches and smiles as the caregiver holds up the scarf in front of her.

Caregiver 4: Oh, where is Sheni? (gasps)

On screen: The scarf drops again. Aaliyah watches and grins.

Caregiver 4: Aaliyah, where’s Sheni? Peekaboo!

On screen: The caregiver holds up the scarf again, and Aaliyah looks through it and smiles.

Caregiver 4: Where is Skye?

On screen: The caregiver drops the scarf again and points to another child. Aaliyah turns her head to look where the caregiver is pointing. Aaliyah watches the other child.

Caregiver 4: There she is. Look at, Skye’s over there. See her? Walking around.

On screen: The caregiver points to a different child and Aaliyah shifts her gaze to the other child.

Caregiver 4: And Kailani’s discovering.
