Cognitive Development Foundation 4.1: Memory

Narrator: In the Cognitive Development domain, the strand Memory includes the foundation Memory. Children from 4 through 11 months recognize familiar people, objects, and routines. They also show awareness that familiar people still exist even when they are not physically present.

Example 1

Text on screen: Recognizes familiar people.

On screen: 9-month-old Skye explores soft blocks on the floor with a caregiver and other children nearby. Her mother, who just arrived, kneels on the floor nearby.

Mother: Skye. Hi!

On screen: Skye looks up at her mother and smiles. She begins crawling forward, and her mother holds out her hands.

Mother: Hi there darling.

On screen: Skye grasps her mother’s hand and pulls herself up to stand. Her mother smiles and picks her up.

Mother: Good afternoon. Good afternoon, baby.

On screen: Her mother kisses her and pats her back softly. Skye smiles.

Mother: You had a good day today is what I heard. Yeah.

Text on screen: Recognizes familiar objects and routines.

On screen: 9-month-old Lucie is standing behind her caregiver holding a toy tomato.

Caregiver 1: A tomato.

Lucie: (vocalizing)

On screen: Another adult passes a bottle to the caregiver.

Caregiver 1: Okay, thank you.

On screen: Lucie rubs her eyes and sits down.

Lucie: (vocalizing)

On screen: She looks at the toy tomato. The caregiver shows the bottle to Lucie.

Caregiver 1: You want to take your bottle?

Lucie: (crying mildly)

On screen: Lucie looks up, drops the tomato, and reaches for the bottle with both hands. She starts to bring the bottle to her mouth.

Caregiver 1: Yeah, ok.

On screen: The caregiver removes the bottle’s cap, and Lucie begins to drink. After a few seconds, she sets the bottle down briefly.

Lucie: Aaah.

On screen: She lifts the bottle up and begins to drink again.

Text on screen: Recognizes familiar people and shows awareness that they still exist, even if they are no longer present.

On screen: 9-month-old Phoebe sits on the floor with another child and a caregiver nearby. The caregiver stands and walks away. Phoebe watches her go and begins to fuss.

Phoebe: (fussing)

On screen: Another caregiver sits down near Phoebe. Phoebe flaps her arms as she looks towards her and smiles. The second caregiver offers a bottle to the other child. Phoebe continues to look around for the first caregiver.

Caregiver 2: Kailani, would you like your bottle? Is that what you’re saying?
