Narrator: In the Cognitive Development domain, the strand Memory includes the foundation Memory. Children from 23 through 36 months anticipate several steps in familiar routines or activities. They remember characteristics of environments and people. Sometimes they communicate about recent events.

On screen: 35-month-old Gisselle enters the room from outside.
Caregiver 1: (speaking Spanish) Let’s go to the bathroom to wash your hands.
On screen: Giselle remembers to first take off her shoes. She sits down in front of the cubbies and starts to take them off.
Caregiver 1: Oh, sorry, I forgot. You took the shoe off your right foot. Now it’s going to be your left foot, isn’t it? Mhm.
On screen: Giselle walks over to a bin of shoes and places hers inside.
Caregiver 1: Who does your hair so pretty, Giselle?
Giselle: My mommy.
Caregiver 1: Your mommy. Oh, look how many pretty and very beautiful colors she put on today.

Text on screen: Anticipates series of steps in familiar routines
On screen: 35-month-old Bill takes his plate to the trash and dumps food into the bin.
Caregiver 2: Good, Bill. Yes. Bill’s cleaning up. Nice. There you go. Food goes in the trash. Where does that go? Where does it go? Put it over there.
On screen: The caregiver points to a spot for plates. Bill puts his plate where she points. Bill grabs his cup off the table and empties it into the sink. The caregiver points next to the plates, and Bill places his cup next to his plate.
Caregiver 2: Mmhmm. Thank you, Bill. Nice, Bill. Ok, cup over there, and then wash your hands. Do you need help? You can do it. Bill knows how to do it.
On screen: Bill walks over to the sink and gets soap for his hands. He rubs them together.
Caregiver 3: Yeah. Yes.
Caregiver 2: Let’s put some water on those hands.
Caregiver 3: One, two, you put soap on your hands. One, two, ok what’s next?
On screen: Bill points to the faucet handle to indicate the next step is turning on the water.

On screen: 34-month-old Scarlet is washing her face at the sink. The sink is plugged and filled partially with water. Scarlet gets her hands wet and brings them up to scrub her face.
Scarlet: Water. Face. Ah, eyes. Ah, eyes. Plug. Plug.
On screen: Scarlet unplugs the sink, letting the water drain down. She steps off the stool and finds the towel under the sink. She uses the towel to dry her face.
