Narrator: In the Cognitive Development domain, the strand Memory includes the foundation Memory. Children from 11 through 23 months remember familiar actions of people, locations of objects, and steps of routines. They use what they remember in interactions with others and during routines.

On screen: 22-month-old Red sits on a couch between his parents. They are going through the steps of their usual morning drop-off routine. His mother finishes reading a book.
Mother: After a break, I feel like new. And so can you. So mama and dada are going to go soon now. So remember to breathe (exaggerated inhale), OK?
Red: (crying)
On screen: Red’s mother closes the book. Red points at the book and cries.
Father: Come say goodbye.
Mother: OK, good job.
On screen: A caregiver kneels nearby.
Father: Come on.
On screen: Red’s father picks him up. Red stands on his father’s lap for a hug.
Red: (crying)
Father: OK, let’s say goodbye, then.
Mother: Can you say bye-bye, touch nose. Touch nose, dada.
On screen: Red rubs his nose against his father’s nose. His parents kiss him on each cheek.
Mother: Good job. Touch nose, mama.
Father: Kiss. Touch nose, mama?
On screen: Red makes an unhappy face.
Mother: Touch nose.
On screen: Red puts his nose to his mother’s and kisses her.
Father: Good job.
On screen: The caregiver approaches and lifts Red up. Red’s mother rubs his back.
Father: You’re gonna have a great day, OK?
Mother: Hi, Chyanne.

Text on screen: Remembers typical actions of people and steps of routines
On screen: 21-month-old August and 19-month-old Isaiah are in an outdoor activity area where several watering cans and teapots are spread out on a table. August puts a watering can away on a shelf. He returns to the table to get another one. A caregiver speaks from off screen.
Caregiver 1: Isaiah, are you gonna help him put it on the shelf?
On screen: Isaiah reaches for August’s watering can.
August: No!
Caregiver 1: Can you put it on the shelf?
On screen: August moves away from Isaiah.
On screen: August puts the watering can on the shelf. Isaiah picks up a teapot and puts it on the shelf. Then, Isaiah returns to the table to get another teapot and puts it on the shelf.

Text on screen: Remembers typical actions of people and steps of routines
On screen: 21-month-old Milani and her caregiver are cleaning up together. Milani walks over to the sink and reaches up toward a paper towel dispenser.
Caregiver 2: You want one, too?
Milani: Yeah.
On screen: The caregiver hands a paper towel to Milani.
Caregiver 2: You gonna help me?
On screen: Milani walks to a table and wipes the edge with the paper towel. She walks to the sink, stands on the stepstool, and holds the papertowel over the sink.
Caregiver 2: Wow, thank you so much.
Milani: Mm?
Caregiver 2: Yeah? (in Spanish) Should we wet it?
On screen: Milani nods at the caregiver.
Caregiver 2: Yeah. You can wet it.
On screen: The caregiver turns on the water. Milani wets the paper towel and carries it to the table. She wipes the table edge again.
Caregiver 2: All right, we’ll have to clean that, too.
On screen: The caregiver kneels and watches Milani wipe the table with the wet paper towel.
Caregiver 2: Wow, (inaudible). It’s gonna look so pretty after it’s done.
Example 4
Text on screen: Remembers the location of an object
On screen: 23-month-old Amelia stands holding a doll and baby bottle. On a shelf in front of her is a basket of dolls. A caregiver sits nearby.
Caregiver 3: Where you gonna put the baby?
On screen: Amelia sets the bottle on the shelf and puts the doll in the basket.
Caregiver 3: Oh, you’re putting the baby back in the crib? In the basket? Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh.
On screen: Amelia picks up a scarf and holds it in front of her face.
Caregiver 3: Hmm. (gasping) Oh, peekaboo.
On screen: Amelia covers the doll with the scarf and claps her hands. The scene changes. It’s sometime later, and Amelia carries soft blocks across the room and gives them to another caregiver.
Caregiver 4: Let’s go play… with the blocks.
On screen: Amelia turns and notices the basket of dolls. She looks at the scarf she put over the doll earlier. She takes several steps toward the basket.
Amelia: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 4: What do you see? What do you see?
On screen: Amelia points at the basket.
Amelia: Baby!
Caregiver 4: Where’s the baby? Where’s the baby?
On screen: Amelia lifts the scarf and knocks the doll out of the basket to the floor.
Amelia: Baby!
Caregiver 4: Under the blanket.
On screen: Amelia picks up the doll.
Amelia: (Inaudible)
