Birth–4 Months

Cognitive Development

Narrator: The Cognitive Development domain includes the strand Emergent Mathematical Thinking. As infants in the first four months interact with objects, they notice similarities and differences. They also explore how parts of their body and nearby objects can move through space.

Example 1

Text on screen: Notices differences by gazing back-and-forth

On screen: 4-month-old Anaya lies on her back on a blanket looking up at her father who sits next to her. She is holding onto a ball with her left hand, and she looks at and reaches for her father’s long, shiny necklace with her right hand.

Father: (inaudible)

On screen: Anaya shifts her attention to looking at the ball in her left hand, watching as it rolls away when she lets go.

Anaya: (vocalizing)

On screen: Anaya looks at her father again then focuses on the ball when her father brings it back to her. She shifts her attention to her father’s necklace again.

Example 2

Text on screen: Interacts with things

On screen: A caregiver holds 4-month-old Endrick upright in her lap, as she speaks to him in Spanish. Endrick watches as she holds up the sleeve of a sweatshirt.

Caregiver: (speaking Spanish) Look. Look. Look what happens.

On screen: Endrick notices his caregiver’s hand, looks at it closely and touches it.

Caregiver: Oh. Oh, you’re still interested in my hand.

On screen: Endrick watches his caregiver’s hand closely.

Caregiver: My hand. I can see you’re interested.

On screen: Endrick pulls her hand toward his mouth. He then notices his caregiver’s fingers.

Caregiver: Endrick, now you’re looking at the fingers. The fingers. My fingers.

On screen: She raises her other hand, and Endrick repeatedly reaches to grasp and release her fingers. She says,

Caregiver: And this one. Did you find my other hand? Very good. Oh, here’s my other hand.

On screen: Endrick touches her hand and then the fabric of her sleeve.

Caregiver: And now the fabric. You’re exploring my fabric. My blouse. Ah.

Example 3

Text on screen: Follows movement of objects in space

On screen: 1-month-old Amara lies on her back on a blanket looking up at her mother who sits next to her holding a toy. As her mother begins to slowly move the toy, Amara turns her head to follow the motion.

Mother: There you go. There you go. Yeah.

On screen: Amara continues to move her eyes and turn her head to follow the toy as her mother moves it from side to side over her.
