Cognitive Development Foundation 2.1: Number Sense

Narrator: In the Cognitive Development domain, the strand Emergent Mathematical Thinking includes the foundation Number Sense. Children from 4 through 11 months use their senses to notice and explore quantity in their environment.

Example 1

Text on screen: Explores quantity using their senses

On screen: 10-month-old Audrey is seated on the floor in front of a wooden box of books. She pulls the box toward herself and looks inside. She picks up a soft book and turns it over in her hands. She brings the book to her mouth and bites it.

Audrey drops the book back into the box and pulls out a board book. She looks at it then drops it onto the floor beside her. She looks back into the box and pulls out another book. She looks at it and drops it outside of the box. She gets one more book, looks at it, and puts it down on the floor. She looks at the three books on the floor.

Example 2

Text on screen: Explores quantity using their senses

On screen: 8-month-old Matthew lies on an activity mat under a pop-up mobile. His caregiver kneels behind him. Matthew holds and explores a sensory toy that has rings, flaps, and bells. He waves the toy around and looks at it.

His caregiver slowly moves so he can see her. Matthew looks at her. Then he notices another toy hanging from the mobile. He rolls toward the toy and reaches for it. His caregiver steadies the toy so he can get a hold of it. He grasps it and tugs on it.

Caregiver 1: There you go.

On screen: Matthew tugs on the toy and looks at it. He pulls it to his mouth.

Example 3

Text on screen: Explores quantity through interacting with objects

On screen: 11-month-old Ke’Ontae stands holding one arm of a low infant chair. The chair has a three-strap seat belt, which is not latched. A caregiver holds on to the back of the chair to keep it stable.

Ke’Ontae: (vocalizing)

On screen: Ke’Ontae reaches across the chair to grasp the right-side strap. He pulls on it. Then he reaches for the dangling center strap and pulls it up onto the chair. He studies it. He lets go of the chair arm so he can use both hands to explore the straps. He looks back and forth between the straps. He leans back a bit and grabs the left-side strap. He looks at it. He continues to tug on and examine all the straps.
