Narrator: In the Cognitive Development domain, the strand Exploration includes the foundation Cause and Effect. Children from 23 through 36 months make simple predictions about what will happen. They also reflect upon what caused something to happen.
Example 1
Text on screen: Makes simple predictions about what will happen and reflects on what causes something to happen
On screen: 34-month-old Scarlet stands in front of a sink. She presses down on the sink’s drain plug to with her fingertips. As she pushes the plug down, the lift rod behind the faucet pops up. Scarlet watches, then presses the lift rod down, causing the drain plug to rise.
Scarlet: (grunting in effort) Touch. Up.
On screen: She repeats this process several times
Scarlet: Push.
On screen: On her last repetition, Scarlett uses her fist to firmly hit the drain plug, then keeps one hand on the closed plug while she uses the other to push down the lift rod. She feels how the two parts move together. She steps down from the stool.
Scarlet: Done.
Example 2
Text on screen: Makes simple predictions about what will happen
On screen: 35-month-old Cesar stands at a table outdoors. On the table is small tub of water with a leaf, sticks, and a stone. Cesar holds another leaf in one hand. With his other hand, he lifts the stone out of the water and drops it, watching it sink. Then, he places his leaf in the water. When it doesn’t sink, he pushes it down.
Cesar: Didn’t fall.
On screen: Cesar picks up the stone and drops it on top of the leaf. He then picks up the leaf and a stick, shaking the water off the leaf.
Cesar: This leaf doesn’t —
Caregiver 1: The leaf doesn’t float?
On screen: Cesar gently places the leaf on the water’s surface and watches it float. He again takes a stone and drops it on the leaf.
Cesar: Doesn’t float.
On screen: Cesar picks up and drops the stone a few more times, splashing the water. The caregiver walks to the table and squats down next to Cesar.
Caregiver 1: It doesn’t float?
Cesar: Now that.
On screen: Cesar points to a small plastic net on the ground. The caregiver picks it up and brings it to the table.
Caregiver 1: Ah, what do you think? What do you think? Do you think this one will float?
On screen: Cesar pulls a stick out of the water bin and tosses it onto the ground. The caregiver holds out the toy and Cesar takes it.
Cesar: We’ll see. Check.
Caregiver 1: Let’s check it out.
On screen: Cesar drops the net into the bin and watches it float on the surface. He claps his hands and smiles excitedly.
Caregiver 1: Is it floating? Or is it sinking?
Cesar: Yes.
On screen: Cesar places his hand on top of the net, pushing it down and releasing it so it floats back to the surface again.
Cesar: Floating.
Caregiver 1: Floating.
Example 3
Text on screen: Reflects on what causes something to happen and makes simple predictions about what will happen
On screen: 35-month-old Arlo sits on the ground outside with 15-month-old Echo and their caregiver. It’s a cold, overcast day, and they are all wearing multiple layers and coats.
Caregiver 2: Because the sun is hiding today.
On screen: The caregiver rubs her hands together trying to warm them.
Echo: (vocalizing)
Arlo: Is it going to sleep?
Caregiver 2: Hmm?
Arlo: The sun?
Caregiver 2: Is the sun going to sleep?
Arlo: Yeah.
Caregiver 2: It’s pretty sleepy. Yeah. It’s way behind the clouds.
On screen: Arlo and the caregiver both look up at the sky.
Arlo: Whoa.
Caregiver 2: I think after we wake up from our nap, it’s going to be sunny.
Arlo: And then can I take one layer off?
Caregiver 2: Then you can surely take some clothes off, yeah.
