Narrator: In the Cognitive Development domain, the strand Exploration includes the foundation Cause and Effect. Children from 11 through 23 months intentionally repeat simple actions to make things happen. They also change the way they do actions to observe what happens.
Example 1
Text on screen: Repeats actions to make things happen and changes their actions to observe what happens
On screen: 18-month-old Elian is sitting on the ground surrounded by musical instruments. A toy xylophone sits directly in front of him. He picks up a jingle bell stick and shakes it, then hits it against the ground.
Elian begins hitting the jingle bell stick against the xylophone. He intentionally moves to hit all the bars of the xylophone to make different sounds.
(Instruments clanging)
Elian has put down the jingle bells. He picks up a toy gong and taps it against the ground.
(Gong ringing)
He holds the gong in his lap briefly then taps it on the ground again.
(Gong ringing)
He brings the gong back to his lap and tries to make it ring by tapping it with his fingers. It makes no sound.
He puts the gong down on the ground, moves the xylophone, and goes back to shaking the jingle bell stick.
(Bells ringing)
Example 2
Text on screen: Repeats actions to make things happen
On screen: 18-month-old Noah plays with a vertical wind-tunnel while his caregiver supervises. Other children play nearby.
Noah: (excited vocalizing)
On screen: Noah places a scarf in the bottom of the wind tunnel. He watches as it rises to the top and falls, landing in front of him. He sends the scarf through the wind tunnel again. This time, he catches it as it falls back down.
Caregiver 1: I think Noah’s very happy.
Noah: (excited vocalizing)
On screen: Noah continues sending the scarf through the wind tunnel, catching it, and repeating.
Example 3
Text on screen: Repeats actions to make things happen
On screen: 23-month-old Tru, 22-month old Rakeem, and their caregiver play together with toy vehicles on a table. Tru has chosen a yellow bulldozer with a wind-up mechanism in its wheels.
Caregiver 2: Want to trade? I’ll take the green one. We’ll do a trade. Oh, Rakeem says, “I want both.” There you go.
On screen: Tru pulls the bulldozer backward along the table, which winds it up. She lets go and watches with a smile as the bulldozer rolls forward to Rakeem and the caregiver.
Caregiver: Whoa! Back to you.
On screen: Tru pulls the bulldozer backward and releases it again.
Tru: (vocalizing)
Caregiver 2: What’s happening?
On screen: Tru pulls and releases the bulldozer one more time.
Caregiver: It’s rolling away. What’s happening?
