On screen: 6-month-old Amelia lies on her back in front of a caregiver. Amelia holds a soft rattle in one hand. The caregiver raises and lowers a scarf between herself and Amelia, playing peekaboo. Several feet away, 9-month-old Phoebe plays independently.

Caregiver 1: Peekaboo! Peekaboo!

Phoebe: (grunting)

On screen: Responding to Phoebe’s grunting, the caregiver turns toward her.

Caregiver 1: What’s wrong Phoebe?

Phoebe: (vocalizing)

On screen: The caregiver picks up a second soft rattle and shakes it in Pheobe’s direction. Amelia turns her head toward the sound and watches as Pheobe smiles and reaches toward the caregiver.

Caregiver 1: Would you like this? Shake, shake, shake, shake, shake? Shake, shake, shake, shake, shake.

On screen: The caregiver returns her attention to Amelia, shaking the rattle. Amelia reaches for the rattle. Now, with rattles in both hands, she shakes them together.

Caregiver 1: Shake, shake, shake, shake, shake. (shakers rattling)

Everett: (vocalizing)

On screen: The caregiver reaches into the basket, pulls out a second rattle, and holds it out toward Everett.

Caregiver 2: Can you do two?

On screen: Everett takes the second rattle in his other hand. He begins shaking both rattles.

Kaia: (vocalizing)

(Shakers rattling louder)

On screen: As the caregiver claps her hands, Everett gets more excited, waving his arms and smiling.

Caregiver 2: Is that fun?

On screen: Kaia looks toward the sound and vocalizes in interest.

Kaia: (vocalizing)

Caregiver 2: Yeah, see. He’s making music.

Example 3

Text on screen: Shows early understanding of others’ intentions and goals

On screen: 11-month-old Milla sits on the floor next to a sink that has a built-in stepstool. She watches with interest as a caregiver approaches with an older child, Xavier, who needs to wash his hands.

Xavier: (Vocalizing)

Caregiver 3: Yeah, Xavier’s going to come wash his hands. Are you saying you’re all done with your bottle?

On screen: Milla turns toward the sink. She leans forward and reaches for the pull handle on the step at the same time the caregiver bends down for it.

Caregiver 3: Let’s get the step. Oh, you’re helping, Milla.

On screen: Milla watches as the caregiver pulls out the step stool. It catches slightly on the carpet, and it takes the caregiver a couple tries to free it.

Caregiver 3: Oh, it’s stuck. There we go.

On screen: Milla puts both hands on the carpeted step and watches Xavier step up.

Xavier: Up.

Caregiver 3: Xavier’s gonna come wash.
