Approaches to Learning

Narrator: The Approaches to Learning domain includes the strand Executive Functioning. Infants in the first four months attend to people and things in their environment. They engage in back-and-forth interactions with their caregivers.

Example 1

Text on screen: Attends to familiar caregivers’ faces and voices

On screen: 4-month-old Anaya is lying on a blanket looking up at her grandmother, who is about to put a sock on Anaya.

Grandmother: Hi. What’s up, boo? How you doing? Huh?

On screen: Anaya lies still looking intently at her grandmother’s face.

Grandmother: Give me your foot. We’re gonna put this sock on.

On screen: Anaya stretches out one of her legs as her grandmother slips on the sock

Grandmother: Aw yeah. Who’s grammy’s girl? Ooop, look. The toe. The toe showed up. The toe showed up.

On screen: Anaya continues focusing on her grandmother’s face and voice as her grandmother talks and sings to her.

Grandmother: Hey. (singing) Hey, good looking. Whatcha got cooking? How bout cooking something up with me?

Text on screen: Attends to things in their environment

On screen: 2-month-old Stella looks at a picture book while cradled in her mother’s arm.

Mother: What’s that? That the star and the moon?

On screen: Stella focuses on the book as her mother names the pictures.

Mother: What about this one? Grapes. Grapes. Should we see what’s on the other side?

On screen: Stella’s mother turns the book over, and Stella’s gaze shifts to focus on the new pictures.

Mother: A strawberry.

Example 3

Text on screen: Shows comfort to familiar caregiver’s voice, face, or touch

On screen: 2-month-old Sana lies on her back in her father’s lap. He cradles her head and strokes her belly while he sings to her in Swedish. Sana’s mother sits next them on the sofa, and Sana grips her finger.

Father: (singing in Swedish)

On screen: Sana focuses on her father’s face and voice. Sana’s face lights up, smiling in delight as her father and mother continue singing to her. As her parents continue singing, Sana looks relaxed and serene.

Mother: Yay!

Father: Yay!
