Approaches to Learning Foundation 2.4: Cognitive Flexibility

Narrator: In the Approaches to Learning domain, the strand Executive Functioning includes the foundation Cognitive Flexibility. Children from 4 through 11 months explore objects, pay attention to things, and change their focus when they notice something that interests them.

Example 1

Text on screen: Explores objects and changes focus when something else interests them

On screen: 10-month-old Audrey sits on a rug holding a maraca. She looks toward older children playing, shakes her maraca briefly, and drops it. She begins to crawl toward the older children. As she crawls, she knocks away a toy in her path.

Before she reaches the other children, Audrey notices a photo album on the floor. She tries to pull the album toward her, but it slides under the rug. She pulls the album from under the rug, sits back, and tries to turn the pages.

Audrey briefly looks at the older children who are talking and playing. Then she turns her attention to the album.

Example 3

Text on screen: Explores objects and changes focus when something else interests them

On screen: 10-month-old Andrew and his caregiver are on opposite sides of a low shelf. They are playing with a bumpy textured ball. Andrew playfully taps and grips the ball and smiles. The caregiver rubs her fingers over the bumps on the ball.

Andrew: (vocalizing)

Caregiver 2: (Inaudible) Yeah, yeah!

On screen: Andrew notices a bead tracker toy on the table. Andrew tries to pull the bead tracker closer. The caregiver sets the ball aside.

Caregiver 2: Oh, do you want to play with this now?

On screen: The caregiver places the bead tracker in front of them, moving a large plastic bead piece along the rod. She spins two beads. Andrew attempts to spin the same beads. He looks over and reaches for a squeaky-toy phone. He squeezes it.

(squeaking noises)

Andrew notices a set of nesting cups on the shelf. He picks them up, turning them as he looks at them, and puts them back down.

Caregiver 2: What’s inside?

On screen: The caregiver looks inside the cups as Andrew moves further down the shelf and picks the toy phone up again.
