Caregiver 1: That you can sit on that side, right?
On screen: Ximena nods.
Caregiver 1: And then Sheridan and Emily. You like that set up? And maybe Audrey can sit next to you.
On screen: Ximena and the caregiver smile at each other.
Caregiver 1: Yeah. Should we do that? Okay. So you want to put your cup on the mat?
On screen: The caregiver picks up a water cup, and hands it to Ximena. Ximena takes the cup and looks back at the table.
Caregiver 1: Which one is your placemat? You can go—

Adali: (inaudible) I want steak. Here, want a steak?
Caregiver 2: For me?
Adali: Yeah, someone want a steak.
Caregiver 2: Oh, you can put it back in here.
On screen: JC uses the spatula to pick up the lettuce from the burner. He puts the lettuce in the pot. He takes another lettuce leaf from the pot and places it on the burner.

Adali: Hmmm, a (inaudible).
On screen: JC turns one of the knobs on the front of the stove. He uses the spatula and his hand to lift the lettuce off the burner and place it in the pot.
Caregiver 2: What did you have for dinner, Adali, with mommy?
On screen: JC picks up the pot and holds it out to his caregiver, smiling excitedly.
JC : Look at, it’s ready.
On screen: The caregiver takes the pot into her hands. JC briefly crosses his arms and looks around like he’s thinking.
Caregiver 2: Yeah, what did you have for dinner, Adali, with mommy? What’d she make you?
Adali: Uh, sopa.
Caregiver 2: Sopa? You like sopa? Does brother eat sopa, too?
On screen: JC looks in plastic toy bins on the floor and finds a pot lid. He picks it up. JC places the lid on top of the pot. He tries to fit the lid on the pot, but the caregiver’s thumb is in the way.
Caregiver 2: What about you, JC? What did you have for dinner?
JC: Sopa!
Caregiver 2: You had sopa, too? I like sopa. You like sopa? What about, does sister eat sopa with you?
On screen: The caregiver hands the pot back to JC. The lid slips off the pot and falls in the toy bin. JC pours the contents of the pot into the bin.
Caregiver 2: Yeah? What about to drink? What does– what does mommy give you to drink with sopa?
JC: Ah, sopa.
On screen: JC looks back up at the caregiver, smiling.
Example 3
Text on screen: Keeps simple rules in mind, with caregiver support
On screen: 35-month-old Cesar runs across a wooden living room floor that is covered with toy train tracks and trains. He slides to a stop, landing in front of his kneeling caregiver.
Caregiver 3: Do you want me to clean up those tracks so you have more space?
Cesar: I’m just jumping over them.
Caregiver 3: You’re just jumping over them?
On screen: Cesar leans gently against his caregiver’s leg.
Cesar: The tracks.
Caregiver 3: Yeah.
On screen: Cesar stands, runs a few steps, and slides on his knees. Stopping at the train tracks on the floor, he picks a few pieces and holds them up. The track segments stay linked, and Cesar carries them toward another part of the room.
Caregiver 3: Will you put them back?
On screen: Cesar places the tracks in a large clear storage bin with other train set pieces. He again runs and slides on his knees across the floor.
Caregiver 3: Now you get more space.
On screen: Cesar runs and slides to pick up another piece of train track. He stands and takes it over to bin.
