Approaches to Learning Foundation 2.1: Attention

Narrator: In the Approaches to Learning domain, the strand Executive Functioning includes the foundation Attention. Children from 4 through 11 months are easily distracted and shift their attention from one thing to another. They also follow another person’s attention to things in their environment.

Example 1

Text on screen: Is easily distracted, and shifts and follows another’s attention

On screen: 9-month-old Michael sits with his caregiver on a rug in a play room. His caregiver speaks to him in both English and Spanish as they interact.

Caregiver 1: (Spanish) Where did Maria go?

On screen: The caregiver holds out her hands and Michael looks at her hands. He gets on his hands and knees and moves toward a large toy house. Michael holds onto the house and turns to look at his caregiver. He turns back to the house, pulling himself up to stand. He holds the house and looks around. His caregiver tries to draw his attention.

Caregiver 1: (Spanish) Look at this. Look.

On screen: Michael turns back to his caregiver, drops to his knees, and crawls to her.

Caregiver 1: (English) Pull, pull, pull.

On screen: She shows him a box stuffed with scarves. Michael smiles, pulls on a scarf, and the box falls over.

Caregiver 1: (Spanish) Let’s take one out. Should I take one out for you?

On screen: Michael lets go of the scarf and turns back to the toy house. He puts his hand on the roof.

Caregiver 1: Michael.

On screen: While holding on to the house with one hand, Michael turns back to the caregiver. He reaches out and grasps one scarf. Then he touches a different scarf.

Michael: (vocalizes)

Caregiver: Yeah? (Spanish) Let’s take one out. A yellow one. (English) The yellow one. You need to pull. One, two, three. Yeah?

On screen: Michael pulls on the scarf, lets it go, and turns back to the toy house he is holding onto. He looks back at the caregiver.

Example 2

Text on screen: Shifts attention from one thing to another

On screen: 11-month-old Kailani is on a rug in a play room. There is a basket of objects next to her. She reaches into the basket and pulls out a block. She looks at the block and turns it over. The block touches a maraca on the floor.

Kailani lets go of the block and picks up the maraca and shakes it. She drops it and picks it up and shakes it again. Holding the maraca in one hand, Kailani uses her other hand to pull the basket closer to her. She takes out a different block and mouths at it.

Kailani shakes the maraca and mouths at it. She looks around. She goes back to mouthing the block then drops it into the basket.

Example 3

Text on screen: Shifts attention from one thing to another

On screen: 11-month-old Olaseni stands holding onto a shelf in a playroom. He watches another infant, Skye, play with a rattle. Skye moves closer to Olaseni and lets go of the rattle. Olaseni smiles and lowers himself to sit down. He looks at a stuffed animal in his hand and lets go of it.

Skye touches his shoulder, and her foot nudges the rattle. Olaseni looks at Skye, touches her, and then watches the rattle as it rolls. He turns to pick up the rattle and shakes it.
