Approaches to Learning

Narrator: The Approaches to Learning domain includes the strand Motivation to Learn. Infants in the first four months begin to show interest in interacting with people and things around them.

Example 1

Mother: Is that good?

Example 2

On screen: 4-month-old Quetzaly explores a soft book while being held in the lap of her caregiver. Her caregiver speaks to her in English and Spanish as they interact. Quetzaly reaches for the book with one hand and then the other hand, pulling it toward her.

Caregiver: Oh, look at that! Yes. Oh, you love the book. Yeah. It’s a book.

On screen: She looks at the book while the caregiver holds it and strokes it softly.

Caregiver: So soft book. Soft book, look, soft book.

On screen: She looks at the book while the caregiver holds it and strokes it softly. She reaches toward the book.

Caregiver: (speaking Spanish) Wow, the book. That.

On screen: Quetzaly brings the book toward herself with her hand.

Caregiver: (English) Happy little.

On screen: She lifts the book up, swings it to the side and drops it.

Caregiver: (Spanish) Hold it. Now you hold it.

On screen: Quetzaly grabs the book as the caregiver moves it to her again. She holds the book in one hand and swings the book to the side.

Caregiver: (English) You hold it. You hold it, little one. You hold it, that book. You’re so really strong.

Example 3

Mother: There you go. There you go.

On screen: Amara continues to move her eyes and head to follow the toy.

Mother: Yeah.
