Approaches to Learning Foundation 1.2: Engagement and Perseverance

Narrator: In the Approaches to Learning domain, the strand Motivation to Learn includes the foundation Engagement and Perseverance. Children from 23 to 36 months spend more time working through tasks to master them. With caregiver guidance, they also find ways to cope when they encounter challenges.

Example 1

Text on screen: Works to master tasks and copes with challenges with caregiver support

On screen: 29-month-old Mia and other children sit at a low table having breakfast. Mia’s plate is empty, but there is a platter of pancakes and tongs in front of her. She picks the tongs up and lightly squeezes them together.

Mia turns the tongs and attempts to use them to pick up a pancake. She gets a pancake by the edge. As she lifts, it slips out of the tongs and lands back on the platter. Looking at the tongs closely, Mia squeezes them together again. As she does, a latch slides down, preventing the tongs from opening again.

Caregiver 1: Do you want more pancakes?

On screen: A caregiver gently takes the tongs, and Mia watches him adjust the latch so they open wider. He hands the tongs back to Mia. Mia takes the tongs and looks back up at her caregiver for reassurance. She turns back toward the platter of pancakes. The caregiver holds the platter steady for her.

Caregiver 2: You want that one? Okay.

On screen: Mia successfully grasps the pancake with the tongs and places it on her plate. The caregiver picks up a bowl and holds it up for Mia.

Caregiver 2: You want a watermelon?

On screen: Mia nods and tries to pick up a piece of watermelon using the tongs.

On screen: 35-month-old Cesar and his caregiver are seated on the floor. Toy trains and tracks lie on the floor around him. Cesar is trying to pick up a piece of train track with a magnetic crane toy.

Cesar: I’ll just pick this one up.

On screen: Cesar begins to turn the crank on the crane. the train track wobbles slightly off the ground.

Caregiver 3: Let’s see.

On screen: The track shifts on the floor but doesn’t rise. Cesar looks closer at the crane.

Caregiver 3: Oh, you’re putting it down. And up.

On screen: Cesar begins turning the crank again. The magnet rises bringing the track with it. But the magnet is not strong enough, and the track falls.

Cesar: (groaning in frustration)

On screen: Cesar throws his head back and puts his hand on his forehead in frustration.

Caregiver 3: Oh, boy.

On screen: The caregiver looks concerned and empathetic. Cesar balls his fists and brings them to his chest, frowning deeply.

Caregiver 3: That’s frustrating. You look frustrated.

On screen: Cesar clasps his hands together and rests his cheek against them. He leans over the toy, holding onto the magnet and picking up the piece train track. He holds the train track to the magnet.

Cesar: I wonder a different magnet.

Caregiver 3: You wonder if a different magnet might work? Let’s check it out.

On screen: Cesar lets go of the track and it immediately falls to the ground. Cesar throws his hands in the air.

Cesar: (sighing)

Caregiver 3: Hmm. What do think is happening with this piece?

On screen: The caregiver points to the piece that continues falling. Cesar continues holding onto the crane.

Cesar: Hmmm. It doesn’t mo— it doesn’t have more magnets coming up.

Caregiver 3: There’s no more magnets coming up.

On screen: Cesar tries to lower the crane magnet, but he turns the crank the wrong way. He tries again, and the magnet lowers.

Cesar: It’s not going down.

Caregiver 3: What else can this crane pick up?

On screen: Cesar holds a finger up to his cheek, thinking.

The scene cuts to Cesar looking into a large tub of train toys. He holds two train cars in his hands. He puts the train cars down and climbs into the toy bin to get two different train toys.

Cesar: Oh, (inaudible) here. There we go. This.

On screen: Cesar climbs out of the bin and sits back down next to the crane. he holds up the two new train toys to show his caregiver. One is a cargo car.

Caregiver 3: Let’s see. I’d like to see which one it can pick up.

Cesar: This one a magnet can pick up.

On screen: Cesar places the cargo piece under the magnet and successfully picks it up. He calmly and carefully lowers and raises the magnet, and the cargo stays attached.

Example 3

On screen: 32-month-old Sheridan stands in front of an easel and holds a red marker. She attempts to put the cap on the marker.

Sheridan: Click here.

On screen: Sheridan holds up the marker and cap toward her caregiver, who is attending to a younger child. The caregiver looks at Sheridan.

Caregiver 4: You can go back to the table and hear the click. Push it on the table here.

On screen: The caregiver taps the table.

Caregiver 4: You need to hear the click. Remember?

On screen: Sheridan walks over to the table. She starts to turn the marker upside down and the cap falls onto the floor.

Caregiver 4: Oops. Try again.

On screen: Sheridan bends down to pick up the cap. She places the cap on top of the marker and tries again to use the table to push it on. The cap falls onto the table as she turns the marker. It rolls onto the floor when she tries to pick it up. Sheridan bends down, picks up the cap and places it back on top of the marker again.

The scene cuts to Sheridan drawing at the easel using a pink marker. Sheridan places the cap on the marker and walks over to the table. She puts the marker upside down into the cap and presses against the table it until the cap clicks into place.

Sheridan: I clicked it.

On screen: 31-month-old Everleigh stands at an outdoor table with her caregiver and another child, Johnny. Both children are playing with magnetic tile building blocks as their caregiver watches.

Caregiver 5: So we have to add more squares.

On screen: Everleigh holds two magnetic tiles trying to connect them as a wall for her structure. She sticks them in place then removes them.

Johnny: (Inaudible)

Caregiver 5: Yeah. Uh oh.

On screen: Everleigh removes the two more pieces from the base of her structure. The scene cuts, and she is still trying to put the wall up without success.

Caregiver 5: Johnny put the monkey inside the room!

Everleigh: (frustrated) Um, help me.

On screen: Looking visibly upset, Everleigh bounces in her seat and then slouches over.

Caregiver 5: Okay. Okay, calm down sweetie. Let’s take a deep breath. We’re good, sweetie, okay? Are you ready? Okay? I need you to close your eyes though. Close your eyes.

On screen: Everleigh closes her eyes, and her caregiver places his hand over her eyes, gently swiping his hand over her face. Everleigh takes a deep breath and smiles.

Caregiver 5: All right, all right, you ready? What do you need Mr. Josh to help you with?

On screen: Everleigh opens her eyes back up and points to her magnetic structure.

Everleigh: (vocalizing)

Caregiver 5: So, where do you want to start, sweetie?

On screen: The caregiver picks up a tile and holds it up on the side of her structure.

Caregiver 5: Do you want to put a magnet tile here?

On screen: The caregiver moves the piece to the center of the structure.

Caregiver 5: Or do you want to put it here?

Everleigh: Here.

On screen: Everleigh points to the front edge of the structure.

Caregiver 5: Do you want to put it here, or right here?

On screen: Everleigh points at the front edge of the structure again.

Everleigh: Right here.

Caregiver 5: Right there, okay.

On screen: The caregiver holds the magnet piece in place so it does not fall.

Caregiver 5: All right, so but, if you, we need to put something that—

On screen: Everleigh places a blue square magnet piece next to the green one, successfully creating a wall.

Caregiver 5: We need to put something right here so it can stick together.

On screen: The caregiver gestures to the sides of the structure, showing where pieces need to go to create stability.

Caregiver 5: Now we have a found… Now we’re building a foundation!

On screen: Everleigh places a magnetic square tile on the side of her structure.
